- "Lone Survivor"
A ship makes its way through the fog, and the crew spot a lifeboat ahead with only one survivor in it, a woman. The captain sends another lifeboat to rescue it, and the captain is puzzled because there are no reported sinkings in the area. The fog is too thick to make out the ship's name on the lifeboat. The rescue crew bring the lifeboat to the liner, and the captain sees the name "Titanic" on the lifeboat. The Titanic sank three years ago, and the captain suspects that it's a prank.
The captain goes on deck to see the survivor. The survivor is a man dressed as a woman, and the captain has him taken to the infirmary. There's only a blanket in the lifeboat, and it appears that it's been afloat for three years, when the Titanic sunk.
The ship's doctor check the survivor, and tells the captain when he arrives that the survivor is thin and malnourished, and has frostbite although they are in warm weather. When the survivor wakes up, the captain questions him about what happened to the other passengers, and the name of the ship. The survivor says it was the Titanic, but can't remember his own name. He describes how the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank, and describes it in a sailor's terminology. The captain suggests the survivor dressed as a woman to gain access lifeboat. The survivor says that he doesn't remember. The captain goes, and the survivor asks the doctor if it's 1912. The doctor says that it isn't, and that it's 1915.
Our in the hallway, the doctor asks the captain what's going on. The captain figures that it's a hoax, but the survivor is a sailor and wonders who's service he's in. He figures the survivor was put adrift to draw them off-course during the ongoing war, and they walk past a buoy saying "Lusitania".
The nurse tells the doctor that the survivor won't eat although he appears like he's starving. The doctor goes in to talk to his patient, and the survivor asks what time it is. Once the doctor says it's 8, the survivor says that he was a stoker on the Titanic, and he was in the lifeboat for three years. He insists that it's possible, and tells the doctor that he was so frightened he would have done anything to survive. The survivor says that he tried to get into a lifeboat but they stopped him, so he put on a dress and knocked a half dozen people aside to get into the lifeboat. The lifeboat ropes snapped and capsized, but the survivor hung on and was the only one who did. He remembers the ship's band playing a hymn, and a great wailing. The survivor looked up and saw hundreds of faces at the railing, and then the Titanic went down, leaving nothing but bodies floating on the water.
The doctor insists that there's a rational explanation. The survivor tells him that Lusitania will be hit by a torpedo and will go down in 18 minutes. He figures that he's a Flying Dutchman, damned and doomed to an eternity of lifeboats and rescues.
Later, the doctor finds the captain and tells him what the survivor said. The captain figures that it's poetic justice and points out that why they are condemned along with the survivor. The doctor says that the survivor believes that they're just phantoms peopling the scene, so to speak. The captain isn't convinced, then turns to find the doctor has disappeared along with the lifeboat. He calls the bridge but gets no response, and then disappears himself.
The survivor is still in the sickbay, and runs to the deck and sees a periscope off the starboard bow. He yells a warning but there's no one to hear him. The survivor goes to the bridge and finds no one there, and calls a warning. The torpedo hits the Lusitania, sinking it.
Forty years later, a new ship, the Andrea Doria, spots a lifeboat from the Lusitania and assumes it's a hoax. They send a lifeboat to bring the survivor's lifeboat aboard.
