"Nanny and the Professor" An Element of Risk (TV Episode 1970) Poster

Juliet Mills: Nanny

Quotes

  • Nanny : [When Prudence's balloon pops, she gets very sad. Nanny comes up to Prudence's bedside the next evening at sunset]  Prudence, there's the most marvellous sunset. Cone with me and see it.

Prudence : No, thank you, Nanny.

Nanny : The clouds and colours are absolutely breathtaking! But me must hurry, come on.

    Prudence : A'll right, Nanny

[Prudence puts the replacement balloon her father got her in her little 'keep-safe' locker]

Nanny : Oh, cone on. Your balloon will be quite safe.

[Nanny picks prudence up out of her bed, and puts her on the floor, and the 2 rush downstairs to marvel at the beautiful evening sky]

Nanny : [In the back of the house, we see the lovely cola off the setting Sun, as Prudence and Nanny walk 'past' us, so we're behind them as they look to the heavens]  Aren't you glad you came?

Prudence : Colours are so pretty.

Nanny : [We watch the sunset from behind Nanny and Prudence]  Rose and scarlett. Crimson and purple. And you know, the marvellous thing is, that since the world began, there's been millions and millions of sunsets, and No. 2 exactly alike.

Prudence : Nanny; it's going away.

Nanny : Yes. It's almost gone.

[Unbeknownst to the pair, the professor comes out on the back porch, and watches them, watching the sky]

Nanny : But wasn't it lovely while it lasted?

Prudence : It makes me feel sad.

Nanny : Why? Because it's so beautiful, it's almost gone?

[Prudence nods 'yes', and Nanny smiles at her]

Nanny : Do you wish you hadn't come out with me to see it?

    Prudence : No.

Nanny : If you'd stayed in your room, you wouldn't feel sad.

Prudence : [Prudence smiles]  But I wouldn't have seen all the clouds that looked like castles, and all the pretty colours.

Nanny : [Nanny smiles]  Right. You know, sweetheart; maybe to enjoy what's beautiful, we have to take the chance of feeling sad, when we lose it.

Prudence : I wish we didn't have to lose it.

Nanny : [Wistfully]  Yes, perhaps that would be nice.

[the sky's now dark, with only the clouds passing]

Nanny : Although, knowing that we won't have that beautiful thing forever, maybe we appreciate it more while we do have it.
