You Have to Look Between The Lines

Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS

-The sol1218 review missed the point. Duvall is in fact GUILTY of the charge. It's just that this being 1962, you couldn't depict that particular crime with the kind of explicitness that you could two decades later or come out and say so directly. Duvall isn't being arrested at the end for stealing $4.23, he's being arrested because he has committed horrific deed of child molestation. The scene of the girl's indifferent parents is 1962 code for showing us just *how* she became prey to this. And listen to Duvall's explanation of what "child molestation" means to the girl. He isn't saying, "They're accusing me of something horrible that I didn't commit" he's saying, "That's something said by people who don't understand what you and I have." If you came away thinking Duvall is innocent, you weren't paying attention.

TOP Talent, Great Script, Rich, Flavorful Character in Each Role
poetcomic16 January 2021
Robert Duvall combines his eerie penchant for underplaying and 'quiet' acting with explosive anger and rage. Madeleine Sherwood, a favorite of Tennessee Williams plays brings to life an adulterous, nasty child-woman. Her scene falling apart under questioning was perfection! Edward Andrews a top character actor too often pigeon-holed into 'business man' roles gets to show his acting chops as well! The script is by one abrams S. Ginnes who did THIRTEEN Naked City scripts - i just recently watched the explosive and wonderful 'Man Without A Skin which was also by him. He wrote loads of great classic TV including Route 66 etc.

I cancelled Netflix. From here on out I watch CLASSIC top notch golden age television shows like this.

Looking for Daddy-O
sol121816 October 2012
***SPOILERS*** Looking for his pop ever since he abandoned him at the tender age of six in a orphanage Frank L. Childe, Robert Duvall, had developed a severe anger management problem. This uncontrollable anger of his lead to among other things the killing of a fellow sailor that he served with in US Navy. It's that sailor who was unmercifully needling him about his nickname "Love Child" while the two were in a bar on shore leave.

It's now that Frank decided to finally track down his pop, if he's still alive, by raiding the orphanage he was placed in and getting a hold of his personal history on file there. Armed with the information of his father William Childe's, Edward Andrews, whereabouts Frank finally finds him and is shocked at what he sees! A totally gutless and poor excuse for a human being whimpering like a baby and crawling on all fours, like a cockroach, that almost made him puke in thinking that that was the father that he was looking for all these years! Besides the shock of finding out what a total wimp his old man was and still is Frank runs into far more serious trouble in his landlady Mrs. Wilson, Madeleine Sherwood, who has to hots for him and whom he spurred is now accusing Frank of being a child molester. That in Frank having a totally innocent relationship with 12 year old Aggie Padgett, Laurie Heineman, whom he met at the Central Park Zoo.

It's when Pop Childe's is given another chance to redeem himself in standing by his son Frank against the false child molesting charges brought against him by the vengeful Mrs. Wilson he like the gutless wonder and sniveling coward that he is turns and runs straight out of his life. Thus leaving his son Frank on his own and his little friend Aggie who was looking forward to meet him in total hysterics! So is the sad and tragic life of Frank L. Childe a man who just can't get a break in life and is destined for a cold jail cell or an early unmarked grave!

***SPOILERS*** What by far is the most tragic event in the entire episode is that Aggie's parents Harry & Ginny Padgett, Peter Collins & Marilyn Lovell, who she ran for help in proving Frank's innocence are about as interested in her and her friend Frank's problems as much as their interested in the local weather reports on the planet Pluto. The Naked City episode ends with the heart broken, in her friend Frank being taking away by the police, Aggie running aimlessly through the streets of NYC as the police try to catch her and prevent Aggie from getting killed before she gets hit by a car or truck that smashes into her.
