****SPOILERS**** It's when newspaper stand man Emil Pappas, Akim Tarmiroff, refuses to listen to both fact and reason in holding out on a guilty verdict on accused wife murderer Richard Calder, Robert Clup, the jury members throw up their hands and vote innocent just to be able, after being sequestered for over a week, to finally go home. To almost no one's surprise but the bull headed, in feeling that Calder was innocent, Pappas proof submerges from the bottom of the Hudson River proving that Calder indeed killed his wife Myra, Joan Potter. But with him being found innocent there's nothing that the law can do to him.
Pappas now in dilemma at first goes to see Calder and his soon to be second wife Eunice Vale, Joanne Linville, at his luxury penthouse apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in order to get him to turn himself into the police! The old nut, Pappas, seems to have forgotten that Calder is now immune from prosecution due to the double jeopardy clause by him getting a jury to find him innocent! Made to look foolish and kicked out of the apartment by a giggling Calder Pappas now begging the Lord for forgiveness for what he about to do plans to whack Calder and correct the terrible mistake that he did by freeing him!
***SPOILERS*** The final ten minutes of this "Naked City" episode where Emil Pappas has his big scene is done without him as much as saying a single word. Pappas now determined to have Calder pay for his crime gets the guy so screwed up in the head that his, that's Calder, crazy actions has his fiancée Eunice not only walk out on him but turn him as well as herself, who took part in Calder's wife murder, over to the police! Even with Clader, not her, being found innocent of murder there's still nothing that the law can do to punish the guy.The only punishment that Calder in fact gets is that he has to live with what he did not in just murdering his wife but making a complete and total fool, in how crazy he acted, of himself for the rest of his life. And that's probably even worst for the smug and always sure of himself Richard Calder then a lifetime stay, rent free, at the notorious Sing Sing or Attica State prisons.
