- Cross, double-cross, and triple-cross as Michael Hagarty and representatives of other governments try to elicit information and money from a Mafia family.
- Jessica reads from a letter her British intelligence (MI-6) friend, Michael Hagarty, wrote of his adventure in Palermo, Sicily. He posed as Monsignor O'Shaugnessy, envoy of the Boston archdiocese, to attend the wedding of Peter Baines to young mob widow Claudia Carboni. After her Carboni in-laws stab to death a young man believed to be posing as relative Gino, the couple accepts an on-the-spot wedding by O'Shaughnessy, so that all three can fly to Geneva and empty Claudia's late husband's numbered Swiss bank account. In Switzerland, Hagarty and the widow confront each other, recalling a deal: she can keep the money if London gets a certain black notebook. Hagarty and Baines, who had likewise guessed Hagarty was an imposter, also confront each other over poor Harold and other matters. The Cabrinos and the C.I.A. show up, and everyone fights for the notebook and/or the money, and the widow's true identity is revealed.—KGF Vissers (edited by GVP)
- On her return from a busy business trip, Jessica arrives at home to find a lengthy letter from her old friend, British spy Michael Hagarty. His latest case involved traveling to Sicily and posing as a priest from Boston who is there to attend the wedding of Peter Baines to Claudia Carboni, the widow of a mafia kingpin. Problems begin when her brother-in-law, Gino Carboni, arrives but Claudia has a way of dealing with him. Her Sicilian in-laws are very attentive and with good reason. They want to get their hands on her dead husband's money, believed to be in a Swiss bank. The couple want to go on their Swiss honeymoon as soon as possible so Hagarty marries them. He, too, wants them to get to Switzerland as soon as possible. He's not so interested in the money, but in a little black book he hopes will be in the same bank vault. In the end, it turns out Hagarty isn't the only one pretending to be something that he isn't.—garykmcd
