Yet another script by Donald Ross in which he named several of the characters after famous jazz musicians. Billy Kyle was a piano player with Louis Armstrong's band in the 1950's. Johnny Windhurst was a British-born Dixieland trumpeter in the 1950's. Frances Hunt was a band singer with Benny Goodman in the 1930's. Arnett Cobb was a rhythm-and-blues saxophonist in the 1940's who replaced Illinois Jacquet in Lionel Hampton's band. Junie Cobb - used as the name of his wife in the show - was a male multi-instrumentalist who played with King Oliver in the 1920's. George "Pee Wee" Erwin played trumpet with Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey in the 1930's. Police lieutenant Gabriel Caceres is named after Ernie Caceres, a Dixieland baritone saxophonist in New York in the late 1940's. Davey Wells' last name comes from Count Basie trombonist Dickie Wells, and Stan Hendricks' last name comes from jazz singer and songwriter Jon Hendricks.
The title is a spoof of The Petrified Forest.
This was the first of three appearances by Gregory Sierra in the role of LAPD detective Lt. Gabe Caceras. He appeared in three previous episodes playing three different characters.
