Introducing Karen Stottlemeyer
TheLittleSongbird18 July 2017
'Monk' has always been one of my most watched shows when needing comfort, to relax after a hard day, a good laugh or a way to spend a lazy weekend.

After the still good but slightly disappointing previous episode "Mr Monk Goes to the Circus", "Mr Monk and the Very, Very Old Man" sees Season 2 more back on track and it is also one of the season's, and shows's, funniest episodes. Monk and Sharona are back in character and Monk's OCD is far more obvious. My very few complaints with "Mr Monk and the Very, Very Old Man" are Sharona and Disher, apart from some good lines and moving the story along, having little to do.

One of the best things about 'Monk', however, has always been the acting of Tony Shalhoub in the title role. It was essential for him to work and be the glue of the show, and Shalhoub not only is that but also at his very best he IS the show. Have always loved the balance of the humour, which is often hilarious, and pathos, which is sincere and touching. One really relates to his OCD troubles, his quirks and phobias.

Bitty Schram and Jason Gray-Stanford, as said, don't have as much to do, which is a pity but both act their parts well and make the most of their screen time.

Where "Mr Monk and the Very, Very Old Man" really shines is in the chemistry between Monk and Stottlemeyer. While their chemistry has always been entertaining, it has never been this seesaw and enjoyable. It was wonderful to see them doing things differently and how they react, the "7:30" vs. "8:00" part is classic Monk and very creative. It is however the vacuum cleaning scene where the relationship reaches breaking point, that is a masterpiece of comedy as is Stottlemeyer's following tirade. Hilarious, it being among the best and funniest pieces of scripting for Stottlemeyer and the show, but at the same time truthful.

Before one forgets, Ted Levine gives one of his best performances of the show and perhaps ever, he is comedy gold and also easy to feel sorry for. Glenne Headley is very strong value as the main guest star, introducing us to Stottlemeyer's wife. All the performances are good.

It's not just the cast though. Another star is the writing, which is also essential to whether the show would be successful or not and succeed it does here. The mix of hilarious wry humour, lovable quirkiness and tender easy-to-relate-to drama is delicately done but extremely deft.

No worries about the mystery being potentially not as good. It is a very intriguing and clever one with some nice twists and a motive that is not obvious at all from the outset.

Visually, the episode is shot in a slick and stylish way, and the music is both understated and quirky. While there is a preference for the theme music for Season 1, Randy Newman's "It's a Jungle Out There" has grown on me overtime, found it annoying at first but appreciate its meaning and what it's trying to say much more now.

In summary, great episode. 9/10 Bethany Cox

A touching ending

Warning: Spoilers
Here Stottlemeyer's wife is introduced and it's a touching mediation on work-life balance and marriage. Also it's very hilarious seeing Monk sharing his apartment with Stottlemeyer after marriage discord in the midst of a murder investigation of the world's oldest man by someone with a secret to hide. The closing scene was incredibly touching, with a surprise appearance by Trudy Monk at the end, and explaining to viewers the mystery of the coffee table positioning. It brings a tear to the eye for any Monk fan.

This is a really great episode, but it could have been better

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is great because it's give the spotlight to captain Stottlemeyer, and Ted Levine delivers a great performance. The plot is The Oldest Man in the World is murdered, by the mayors second in command, why? Because five years prior he supposedly ran over and killed a teenager named Darren Leveroni, and wrote a confessional letter which he put in a time capsule, he hopped it wouldn't read or heard from for a hundred years or so. However, the oldest man in the world was given a promise by the mayor that if he lived an extra five years and he was still in office, that they would dig the time capsule up and add another chapter to his biography. But the mayor's assistant, (Dennis) couldn't let that happen. Because he was paranoid that they would open the letter bag.

This is really just a minor complaint, but why would they open up their letters. If the old man, just wanted to add another chapter too the book, all they had to do with dig it up, add the chapter then bury it again, you don't have to open the letters. This is a minor plot hole, which you argue was part of Dennis's paranoia. However if i were writing this, i have there be a twist in the reveal. What if, Dennis wasn't the one who killed Darren Leveroni. What if it was the mayor. What if the night Leveroni was killed, Dennis was being driven home by the mayor, because he was so drunk and wasted, after all its revealed that Dennis did join AA afterwards. What if the mayor was trying to calm dennis or something, and he hit Leveroni by accident. He was driving Dennis card, something he wasn't supposed to be doing, and this of course would ruin his entire life. So after hitting Leveroni he took Dennis and put him in the drivers seat, and when Dennis awoke, he found out what he had done. He probably went to the mayor begging for help, and he helped Dennis dispose of that car. But at the same time, Dennis was wracked by guilt, and the mayor was probably never going to dig up the time capsule anyway, after all he made a public promise to the oldest man in the world that he was going to dig up the thing, wouldn't he make it a big deal and have everything prepared for it, no because he was in on the conspiracy. Dennis was a patsy, who murdered two people in vain.

Best episode so far and surely one of the best in the entire series

Why was it good? I CRIED , if an episode can make me cry, means it's really good cause usually I'm emotionless haha, the chemistry between stottlemeyer and monk , the love hate between them, the real reason why monk arranged things his way, was all so touching to me , best thing I've watched all week and brilliant acting by all involved . Although Sharona wasn't as prominent in this episode, it made it fresh as we get to see the chemistry between the captain and monk! Brilliant episode!

Good Chemistry
Hitchcoc5 March 2020
First of all, the case seems so inexplicable. So where does one start. But Stottlemeyer moving in with Monk is to die for. The OCD is absolutely insane. We watch the Captain doing a slow burn until he practically catches fire. The chemistry between these two fine actors works so well. But what really makes this is the sadness endured. Excellent episode.

The Oldest Man in the World
claudio_carvalho27 April 2024
On the eve of his birthday, the oldest man in the world, Hiram Hollings, is found dead on his bed. Stottlemeyer's wife, Karen, is a documentary filmmaker that made a film about Hollings and asks her husband to investigate the case since she believes he was murdered. Stottlemeyer calls Monk to help him, and they go to the crime scene, where Monk finds evidence that Hollings was murdered. Meanwhile, Stottlemeyer and Karen have an argument and Stottlemeyer moves to Monk's home to stay with him, but their relationship is problematic. However, they proceed investigating the case.

"Mr. Monk and the Very, Very Old Man" is another funny episode of "Monk", where the viewers are introduced to Stottlemeyer's wife, Karen. Monk's phobias are very funny and poor Stottlemeyer' living with that. The reason why Monk keeps the table in an inclined position is explained in the very end of the show. My vote is eight.
