Quirky as expected
moysant15 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
A woman disappears but is soon found by a psychic who claims she found the woman's body through her special gift. Monk doesn't believe in psychic powers and soon suspects it is murder but must convince everyone else, especially Sharona who thinks the psychic is the real deal and wants a lovelife reading.

Monk's techniques are very similar to the sort of stuff in the original Sherlock Holmes stories (blisters on an finger in one later episode leads him to conclude a man has been on a fishing trip), but often the murder case takes a back seat to an exploration of Monk's OCD and the tragi-comedic situations it leads to.

This episode has some amusing and lovely interactions between him and his nurse, Sharona, and lifts the whole thing above the usual detective fare on TV. The endings is a little implausible, and no-one seems to actually feel anything for the dead person, but this is a quirky show rather than a drama.

Early Monk

I very much like the early Monk episodes, and this is no exception. The writers are getting the characters established, and we see this evolve into an award winning series.

Good Watch - (7.0)
sujith789_reviews15 March 2020
  • Watched in Amazon Prime. The running time is about 43 minutes.
  • The killer is revealed in the first scene. This is more of a howdunnit episode.
  • Wife of a policeman is missing and surprisingly a psychic finds the dead body of the missing wife.
  • Ending wasn't the best. The method they used to admit the killer of his crime was not convincible.
  • Verdict: A good watch.

Adrian Monk, murder and a psychic
TheLittleSongbird8 July 2017
'Monk' has always been one of my most watched shows when needing comfort, to relax after a hard day, a good laugh or a way to spend a lazy weekend. "Mr Monk and the Psychic" is only the third episode and the show is showing no signs of declining.

When it comes to naming favourite episodes of mine from 'Monk', "Mr Monk and the Psychic" is up there and a perfect example of when the show was particularly great and how strong it was because changes with the formula. Some 'Monk' episodes are better than others, which is true of most shows, but that is true of many shows, even the best ones have not so good episodes and even they on the most part are still better than a lot of shows at their weakest.

One of the best things about 'Monk' has always been the acting of Tony Shalhoub in the title role, it was essential for him to work and be the glue of the show, and Shalhoub not only is that but also at his very best he IS the show. Have always loved the balance of the humour, which is often hilarious, and pathos, which is sincere and touching. It is remarkable here that for an episode that only introduces him that one likes him straight away, even with his quirks and deficiencies that could easily have been overplayed, and also that he is better developed than most titular characters of other shows at this particular stage. Who can't help love Monk's brilliant mind too?

He is very well supported by a sharp and no-nonsense but also sympathetic Bitty Schram, whose Sharona makes for a worthy and entertaining partner for Monk's sleuthing and somebody with a maternal side. There is always a debate at who's better between Sharona and Natalie, personally like both in their own way and consider them both attractive though as of now leaning towards Natalie as the better acted and more attentive of the two.

Also by a very amusing, and sometimes even funnier than that, Ted Levine, what a difference from his Buffalo Bill in 'The Silence of the Lambs'. Jason Gray-Stanford is not quite as entertaining, with not quite as memorable lines (only because the other three are so good that's all) but shows great chemistry with everyone and is appealing enough. The supporting cast work well, with good performances from Linda Kash as the dotty psychic and John Bourgeois.

It's not just the cast though. Another star is the writing, which is also essential to whether the show would be successful or not and succeed it does here. The mix of hilarious wry humour, lovable quirkiness and tender easy-to-relate-to drama is delicately done but extremely deft, which elevates what could have been just a conventional and formulaic story to a greater level.

On paper, the story may have been conventional but is absorbing and clever with some nice twists, and it was wonderful to see and hear Monk's deductions, some of which like with the pebble ingenious. The car seat one is one that the viewer would pick up before the characters do but is well interwoven into the case solving. The banter between Monk and Sharona was immensely enjoyable and a large part of the episode's charm. The ending is a little implausible but neatly wrapped up and easy to comprehend and it was not in a way that would bring down the episode that badly.

"Mr Monk and the Psychic" is shot in a slick and stylish way, and the music is both understated and quirky. Much prefer the jazzy Season 1 theme tune to the later "It's a Jungle Out There", which always struck me before as one of my least favourite assets of 'Monk' but has since grown on me, which should have been kept. It's all very capably directed throughout.

All in all, another winner from Season 1 and 'Monk' overall. 10/10 Bethany Cox

Okay

An okay episode of Monk. The opening (2-part) episode was interesting and introduced us to the characters. The mystery was only unravelled at the end, as all crime dramas should be.

Here, the cuplrit is known from the start, so there's no mystery. Monk is just as weird here as in the opening episode and there's no real evolution in that regard.

While it's still reasonably entertaining it does cement the view that the show is all about gimmickry and is more style than substance.

Nice Twists, but Strength in the Characters
Hitchcoc21 February 2020
The wife oof a big shot police commissioner is murdered. It seems like a car accident, but when Monk arrives on the scene, he begins to smell a rat. Once again, he must overcome his OCD to continue to investigate. He takes the suspects and some tiny bits of evidence and weaves them. The woman who plays the psychic underplays her role (which makes her more endearing, rather than a bona fide nut case). Once again, Tony Shlhoub shines.

"He's a psychic who doesn't believe in psychics."
Hey_Sweden4 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Monks' latest case has him investigating what seems to be the "accidental" death of the police commissioners' wife. Monk, however, is suspicious right from the start, and of course he's proven right in doubting the way things are set up. A flaky, phony medium (Linda Kash, "Best in Show") has conveniently been "led" to the victims' body, making her think that for once she had a real psychic ability.

Eliminating a lot of suspense is the fact that we SEE the perpetrator in action in the brief pre-credits scene; overall, this is not a great "mystery", but it DOES entertain, largely because Monk himself is such an unconventional sleuth. Granted, he's obviously got an extreme case of phobias in order to maximize the comedy potential, but Tony Shalhoub is just so winning in the role, making Monk endearing even though we can totally see his capacity to annoy a person. ESPECIALLY long-suffering nurse / companion Sharona. SHE actually has to go digging in a trash bin for an important piece of evidence that he thinks he's lost!

One of the best bits is actually the grand finale where Monk enlists the help of others, including Stottlemeyer & Disher, in putting on a big show in order to trap the murder suspect.

Personally, I'm happy to see a TV series introduce such a healthy amount of humor in the over-stuffed detective TV show genre, although I don't doubt that some episodes of Monk will be better than others.

Seven out of 10.

The Police Commissioner and the Psychic
claudio_carvalho30 March 2024
A man is talking to his wife, who is driving fast in a lonely road, saying that her dog is wounded. But the dog is fine, and he is installing steel ramps on the road. His wife only sees the ramps when her car is flying off the ramps and falls in a cliff. Monk and Sharona attend a press conference, and the killer is the former police commissioner Harry Ashcombe, who is asking for information about the whereabouts of his missing wife. Soon, the "psychic" Dolly Flint awakes near Kate Ashcombe and calls the police. Dolly is a con artist that was arrested three times for fraud by Stottlemeyer and neither Monk nor Stottlemeyer believe in her "abilities". Monk notes strange things in the location of the accident, and later, he goes with Sharona to the memorial service at Ashcombe's house. He sees Kate's belongings already packed and a muddy pair of boots. Then Monk snoops Ashcombe's correspondence and finds one sent to his former girlfriend, Jenny Cooper. Now Monk suspects that Harry may be the killer of Kate.

"Mr. Monk and the Psychic" is the second episode of the unconventional detective Monk. The plot is funny, predictable in some parts and very well resolved in the end. The phobias of Monk help him to resolve the case, with the support of Stottlemeyer, Dolly Flint and Jenny Cooper. My vote is eight.
