A bit silly but fun
moysant20 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The crime itself is a bit dumb (the murder, first seen by Benji - Sharona's son - turns into a hunt for the body, which seems to be moved around a lot) but the whole idea of Monk not being able to relax at a beach resort is cute. His involvement with the hotel security chief, whose only training seems to be from film noir movies is amusing enough, especially once she uses a gadget that shows up human bodily fluids (blood, mucus and semen as she explains until Monk tells her to stop) that the naked eye can't detect. She uses Monk's hotel room as a test and he, of course, goes into germ phobic meltdown. The concluding moments are nice as Monk resolves the case - but unbelievable - but this show isn't about reality.

Love the movie references
trudyr_19999 May 2023
My favorite things about this episode: the film noir-ish jazz playing when Monk and Bronwyn have a toothpick (since they can't have cigarettes, of course), and the fact that Bronwyn keeps making references to crime movies she's seen as a basis for her detective work. "You do have nonfictional police experience, don't you?" Adrian asks. I may not be quoting verbatim, but you get the idea. Polly Draper's excellent, as is the guy who plays the hotel manager, Graham Harley. And Tony, Bitty, and Max Morrow as Benjy all deliver the goods as usual. I also love that Monk believes Benjy and supports him all the way.

Merry Maids!!!

This was enjoyable. The weird part was the constant posturing by the hotel manager. He was so intractable. Of course, Sharona's son sees a murder take place while looking through one of those observation binoculars and this leads our guy to a wholesale assault on the place. He pairs up with a neat hotel detective who helps him along the way. Sharona's search for the perfect man meets obstacles.

Holiday time with Mr Monk
TheLittleSongbird11 July 2017
'Monk' has always been one of my most watched shows when needing comfort, to relax after a hard day, a good laugh or a way to spend a lazy weekend.

There may be better episodes in Season 1 than "Mr Monk Takes a Vacation", such as "Mr Monk and the Candidate", "Mr Monk Goes to the Asylum", "Mr Monk and the Psychic", "Mr Monk and the Other Woman" and "Mr Monk Meets Dale the Whale", if we're talking about just the previous episodes and this for a minute. But even when Season 1 was not quite at its best it was still solid and even very good, "Mr Monk Takes a Vacation" is not excepted from that.

It is agreed that the crime/story is a bit silly (although the summation wraps up things neatly), even for early Monk, this time round, with the hunt for the body being a little on the repetitious side and taking a little too much episode time. Also, kind of missed Stottlemeyer here, can understand why he was not there but while Randy is likeably earnest enough and Jason Gray-Stanford is growing in confidence Stottlemeyer has always been funnier and more interesting.

"Mr Monk Takes a Vacation" has so many great things though. One of the best things about 'Monk' has always been the acting of Tony Shalhoub in the title role, it was essential for him to work and be the glue of the show, and Shalhoub not only is that but also at his very best he IS the show. Have always loved the balance of the humour, which is often hilarious, and pathos, which is sincere and touching. It is remarkable here that right from the first episode to when the show ended that one likes him straight away, even with his quirks and deficiencies that could easily have been overplayed, and also that he is better developed than most titular characters of other shows at this particular stage. Who can't help love Monk's brilliant mind too?

He is very well supported by a sharp and no-nonsense but also sympathetic Bitty Schram, whose Sharona makes for a worthy and entertaining partner for Monk's sleuthing and somebody with a maternal side. There is always a debate at who's better between Sharona and Natalie, personally like both in their own way and consider them both attractive though as of now leaning towards Natalie as the better acted and more attentive of the two. Max Morrow is cute as Benjy and the supporting cast do well.

As said many times before with Monk, it's not just the cast. Another star is the writing, which is also essential to whether the show would be successful or not and succeed it does here. The mix of hilarious wry humour, lovable quirkiness and tender easy-to-relate-to drama is delicately done but extremely deft.

It's the character moments that make "Mr Monk Takes a Vacation" a better episode than it could have been. Not just the chemistry between Monk and Sharona, but particularly the amusing one between Monk and the security chief and the parts dealing with the germ-phobia are pretty hilarious. Can also identify with Monk with his struggles with relaxing.

Visually, the episode is shot in a slick and stylish way, and the music is both understated and quirky. Much prefer the jazzy Season 1 theme tune to the later "It's a Jungle Out There", which always struck me before as one of my least favourite assets of 'Monk' but has since grown on me, which should have been kept. It's all very capably directed.

Overall, very good. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Almost.....

Warning: Spoilers
This is my opinion. I really like this episode. It is funny, fast and puzzling at the same time. Plus Bengy gets a lot of air time for a change. The one minus? Bitty is very attractive. Should have had extended air time in her swimsuits and tennis outfit.

Mr Monk and the Floppy Disk and the Race Card
safenoe23 January 2020
An intriguing episode where the wide-eyed Benjy witnesses a murder at a hotel resort, or did he? Monk's faith in Benjy has many twists and turns, along with Monk accused of racial profiling by Hispanic hotel housekeepers (ironic as Mr Monk is Arab-American). We also see evidence of the early 2000s...a floppy disk! The ending was silently intriguing for sure.

Interesting
grantss28 July 2022
An interesting and intriguing episode of Monk. Fairly unique in that the crime is alleged, by Sharona's son! Finding a body to prove a murder was committed is elusive and becomes the focal point of the episode.

Where Is the Body?
claudio_carvalho12 April 2024
Monk, Sharona and Benjy take vacation in a fully booked resort. While Benjy is snooping around with a binocular, he witnesses the murdering of a woman. Monk and the hotel security, Rita Bronwyn, goes to the room that is rented to the investor John Fenimore believing he killed his wife, but the crime scene is perfectly cleaned. Soon his wife Irene Fenimore returns to the hotel and clears his name. Meanwhile, one maid is missing and the other four tells the hotel manager that she traveled to get married. Monk and Rita continue the investigation and the four maids become suspects. But where the body is?

"Mr. Monk Takes a Vacation" is one of the best episodes of Monk so far. His unforgettable vacation with Sharona and Benjy is funny and mysterious. His comment about Sharona's flirtation and hee reaction are hilarious. Monk is the only that believe in Benjy that was correct. My vote is eight.

Favorite childhood episode!

Warning: Spoilers
I've rewatched Monk off & on since it first aired! & this episode is always the one that reminds me of Monk! I remember watching this episode for the first time when I was super little. Probably 8 or so. It scared me so bad but I loved it! The maids are truly evil in this episode. & seeing the maid in the suitcase at the end of the episode was what really freaked me out! When I was little, my favorite thing in the whole world was going to a hotel.. and this episode made me a little uneasy about going to one again. My mom & I love monk so much & we've been watching for over 20 years! Perfect casting!!
