Good Mix Of Humor & Suspense
ccthemovieman-126 November 2006
A pizza men is 40 minutes late delivering a pizza to Natalie, her daughter and Monk. Natalie notices the man left her a $50 bill by mistake, rushes out to tell him, but he had just driven away. She follows him and discovers him parked in the middle of the city, dead in his vehicle....but he's not the guy who delivered the pizza. She spends the rest of the show trying to find out what's going on here.

There is another story, a bigger one that all the cops are in on as a prominent female judge is missing. Capt. Stottlemeyer has to bring all the evidence into Monk's bedroom so he'll look at it and help solve the case.

Much of the show is devoted to how Monk's illness which, of course, he makes into a huge production. His carrying on and actions while suffering no more than a bad cold are pretty ludicrous, as you can imagine if you've seen this show before.

The ending is suspenseful and the episode overall is very entertaining.

Polly Wolly Doodle
Hitchcoc25 March 2020
No one can exaggerate the basic human challenges like Adrian Monk. Here he has the flu and makes it a titanic event. Of course, if he experiences a modicum of pain, then the entire world must join him. The crime is much less of an issue than watching Mr. Monk go through hell and take everyone with him. I found this to be quite delightful.

Natalie becomes more confident
safenoe17 August 2020
I miss Sharona, but Natalie has become more confident in this fine series. I sometimes wonder what if Sharona was still in the series. Could it have lasted 8 seasons? I think so. Still, Natalie saved the day with Sharona's unexpected departure.

Illness, deadly pizza deliveries and a missing judge
TheLittleSongbird4 August 2017
'Monk' has always been one of my most watched shows when needing comfort, to relax after a hard day, a good laugh or a way to spend a lazy weekend.

While not as special as "Mr Monk Goes Home Again" (which is one of my favourite 'Monk' episodes), "Mr Monk Stays in Bed" is an improvement over the decent but unbalanced season opener "Mr Monk and the Other Detective". It is enormously enjoyable stuff, with some of the funniest moments of the entire show, but Monk's illness and how he makes a big deal of it is more memorable than the still very well constructed and absorbing mystery where neither the who, how and why are obvious until later on.

There is perhaps a little too much focus on Natalie. One can understand why to some extent in trying to make her personality a little more interesting and differentiated. Mostly it comes off well and one admires her tenacity in solving the case when nobody else will, but at this point she was much better as Monk's partner/helper than what is essentially the main crime solver where she seemed a little out of her depth. There are occasions where she is a little whiny and self-absorbed, like how she reacts to Monk's actually understandable (especially in that way, while "Polly Wolly Doodle" is hardly a bad tune you do find yourself annoyed with it at the episode's end) irritation at Julie's get well soon card. On the most part though she is settling in well, her chemistry with Monk is sparkling even more, her personality is starting to become more differentiated and more interesting, she's useful and the two characters function very well together. She has a down-to-earth-ness, sensitivity and sass that makes one warm to her as well as being more sympathetic to Monk's issues. Traylor Howard is doing just fine.

As said many times, one of the best things about 'Monk' has always been the acting of Tony Shalhoub in the title role. It was essential for him to work and be the glue of the show, and Shalhoub not only is that but also at his very best he IS the show. Have always loved the balance of the humour, which is often hilarious, and pathos, which is sincere and touching.

Jason Gray-Stanford and particularly Ted Levine are very amusing, especially in the hilarious table mix up and Stottlemeyer's rapport with Monk.

While the mystery is diverting, with an edge-of-your-seat suspenseful climax (love Monk's role here, he has never been braver), it's the character moments that shine more. Not just the table mix up and Stottlemeyer and Monk but especially everything centred around Monk's illness. Monk's belief that he has the Ebola Virus, the way he insists the tissue be disposed of and the "Polly Wolly Doodle" card (which no matter how irritating it is proves to be vital to the case being solved) are particular standout moments.

It's not just the cast or story though. Another star is the writing, which is also essential to whether the show would be successful or not and succeed it does here. The mix of hilarious wry humour, lovable quirkiness and tender easy-to-relate-to drama is delicately done. The quirks are sympathetically done and never exploited or overdone.

Visually, the episode is shot in a slick and stylish way, and the music is both understated and quirky. While there is a preference for the theme music for Season 1, Randy Newman's "It's a Jungle Out There" has grown on me overtime, found it annoying at first but appreciate its meaning and what it's trying to say much more now. Oh and a good job is done with the different opening credits sequence to accommodate the changes made.

Altogether, great episode if not quite a favourite. 9/10 Bethany Cox

This episode does make me sick, it makes me angry
snickzella21 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Monk is one of those hit or miss shows that really needs to be examined. Because while the idea of an OCD detective is a good idea, this show focuses on being a comedy instead of a hard hitting crime drama. Because when this masters the dramatic aspects as established in each episode, it seriously works, and makes you feel invested. But this episode highlights a serious problem with the show. That the creators just care about the comedy, instead of the serious drama. Because from watching this episode, I can pick up that it had a much more dramatic mystery going on that sadly took a backside to monk being an annoying man child. What do I mean. The episode is about a pizza boy that's found dead by Natalie, and it wasn't the same man who delivered the pizza at Monk's place. During the initial crime scene investigation everyone gets pulled away from this case to look of a missing judge who is a "friend of the mayor". All the clues and signs point to the person that was responsible for their disappearance being a lawyer who couldn't be seen socially with her, who killed the pizza boy that Natalie found as well as the judge.

It's pretty clear that their were a lot of re-writes too this episode. I'm thinking that this was originally going to be an episode about Monk and a pizza store, but it got changed along the way because the writers wanted for him to be sick, because it's "comedy gold" in their minds. If I had to guess what the mystery really it was this: There is a scene where Stottlemyer and Randy go to a country club to question a man who had a reason to kill the judge, but he tells them that their talking to the wrong man as they should be questioning the mysterious lover she was making out with in the car. All the clues point it to being Reggie Dennison a lawyer. But here's the problem with that. Since we don't know what type of Lawyer Dennison is, or if he works with the judge then something tells me, it wasn't him making out with the judge in the car. Because I think the mystery was going to be a lot bigger. Because why would the mayor take all the working homicide detectives off of a murder case to search for a judge who was only a couple hours late to a fundraiser. Then it should be obvious at this point, that "no", Dennison wasn't the one in the car making out with the judge. It was the mayor. Think about it: The mayor and the judge obviously were having an affair, Dennison and the judge were probably already in a relationship, but for whatever reason; maybe it was because Dennison wasn't a successful lawyer, or maybe it was because he had anger issues, maybe he sacrificed everything he had for this women and she left him for someone else. Whatever the reason being; the mayor probably didn't know that the Judge's boyfriend was a lawyer, plus just his status as the mayor and them being seen together would be a public scandal. But it's why I think the mayor had all the officers looking for her, because he probably offered the judge a much better life, while also keeping their relationship a secret. But since the Mayor didn't know how her boyfriend would respond, it was instead murder. That night of the judge went missing, she was supposed to be at a fundraiser, if I had to guess she had told the mayor that she was going to break it off officially with Dennison, but he killed her instead, then the stuff with the pizza boy being a witness and Dennison being the one impersonating him all happened. So that's why the mayor pulled all the police off their case because he had information vital to her disappearance that he didn't want to share but just wanted the judge found to protect his image.

All in all this episode sucks. The humors lame, the mystery is not well developed as it should be, and it's just a slog to get through.
