Hiring a decaffeinated tea leaf

Arthur pays the price for hiring and trusting Ron (Kenneth Colley) for installing a security system on the cheap. This sort of formula of him hiring dodgy handymen was used to much better effect in other episodes and there is something off (or badly written ) about this one . Watch out for a pre Bill Simon Rouse in another appearance as a high ranked copper . We have Arthur swigging vodka thanks to the generosity of his old Barman pal Dave in the lockup when I doubt he needed to be there in the first place and attempting to feed some of the vodka to a dangerous dog to quieten him down.

Bizarre episode overall.

Cost-saving episode

Apparently, in TV land, if the money allotted for the production of a show started to get a little tight as the season wore on, they'd pound out a throwaway episode where the characters (and thus production) barely had to move.

I believe this is such an episode.

Off the top we get Arthur Daley trying to convince the local shopkeepers to buy his alarm system. They're not interested because nobody knows how to install them. So Daley hires Ron, an ex-burglar, to be his installation tech.

Unfortunately for all involved, Ron uses the client list to burgle, rather than secure. Meanwhile, his installation techniques leave Arthur stuck in his own lockup on his anniversary night.

Too much of the episode is Arthur alone in that lockup. Even George Cole's esteemed acting gifts can't salvage such a glaring lack of narrative meat.

Ray Daley isn't given enough to do. In fact, for the first time I was tired of seeing him poncing around in that boxy 90s suit. DS Morley and his sidekick don't really move the needle, either.

Ultimately, Tthere just isn't enough here to flesh out an entire hour-long episode, and several times I was tempted to hit the FFW button. But that's OK. There were duds during the Waterman era of Minder, too.

On to the next one.

Warning: Spoilers
Series 8 Episode 8

Ray is delivering goods to 'Kowloon's Dry Goods Ltd' and is being yelled at by the owner, Mr Fong.

In a video rental store Arthur is trying to sell the owner, Imran, a new 'Daley Security System'.

Imran declines as he has Syd, a Rottweiler. In the Winchester later, Dave reminds Arthur it is his wife's birthday, which he has forgotten for the past 2 years. Arthur insists he has an evening planned, at the boxing. Ray tells Arthur customers won't pay for the security systems as they want them installed and tells him to hire an electrician. Arthur and Ray visit Ron, a former thief, working at a health food stand. Arthur offers him a job installing security systems based on his knowledge of breaking into them. Ron accepts.

At Arthur's lock-up Ron tells Arthur to update his own security system (wooden doors and a padlock).

Ron wires up one of Arthur's security systems, but it malfunctions. Ron proceeds to install an electric shutter door. Arthur gives Ron a list of client instillations for the next day. Ron asks for some money but Arthur makes excuses. Ron and Ray leave. Arthur prepares to leave, activates his new electric shutter door but it doesn't fully close, leaving a large gap to the floor. An alarm goes off.

Ray is on a night out with friends. Arthur phones around trying to get hold of him. He phones Dave at the Winchester, who says Ray isn't there. Arthur is stuck in the lock-up. At the local police station they discuss the low arrest quota. The top arresting officer is the ambitious P. C. Corman. In the lock-up the security system short circuits and the lights go out. Dave sends a cabbie to bring Arthur some vodka and tonic. Ray and friends are at an Indian restaurant.

Corman and his partner pass by Arthur's lock-up and spot Arthur's silhouette at the window, in the darkness. Corman enters and arrests Arthur. He finds Arthur's list of security system clients and boxing tickets, reminding Arthur he is missing his wife's birthday. Ray arrives at the Winchester and discovers Arthur is stranded.

At the police station D. S. Morley and D. C. Park interview Arthur, pretending not to know him, and hear there is currently a burglary at Kowloon's Dry Goods. Arthur is released. In the car he tells Ray about the robbery at Kowloon's. Ray surmises it is Ron, who has a list of places needing security and are therefore easy to burgle. Ray drops Arthur at the lock-up and goes looking for Ron, tracking him via the client list. At Kowloon's, Morley and Park discover a video recorder has been stolen.

Imran brings Syd to Arthur's lock-up for protection. At the police station Corman is embarrassed at having arrested Arthur on his own property. Syd spooks Arthur, who locks himself in his office.

Corman hears the name 'Kowloon's' over the police radio and recalls it from Arthur's list. Arthur slips an ashtray filled with vodka outside the office door for Syd to drink. Ray catches up with Ron stealing a car radio. Ron says they should leave. Ray demands he reinstalls it.

Syd is asleep. Arthur escapes his office. Ray and Ron are caught trespassing by Corman and his partner. Arthur sits in his car drinking. His car battery dies and a homeless man hassles him for some vodka.

Arthur arrives at the police station. Morley tells him Ray and Ron were caught red-handed with the video recorder from Kowloon's at the second location on Arthur's list. Arthur claims a misunderstanding, stating they were checking the compatibility of the video recorder with Arthur's security system, doing it at night as that is when criminals operate and Ray was present as his limited knowledge was vital to test the security. Ray and Ron are later released. Arthur berates Ron and tells him the lock-up shutter won't close. Ron fixes the shutter and it closes with Arthur inside. The shutter jams and won't reopen. Syd is awake and proceeds to chase a trapped Arthur around the lock-up.
