Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony
Quotes
-
Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the study to see Tipton seated in a high backed chair at his desk, holding a magnifying glass and examining a large coin collection. Only Tipton's hands are visible to viewers] You sent for me, sir?
John Beresford Tipton : Numismatics, Mike.
Michael Anthony : I beg your pardon, sir?
John Beresford Tipton : [Chuckles] Rare coins. Fascinating hobby.
Michael Anthony : Yes, sir.
John Beresford Tipton : [Tipton continues to examine his collection] You know, it must be one of man's primeval instincts to collect things, Mike. Coins, stamps, miniatures. Why, some people even collect grudges.
Michael Anthony : Grudges, sir?
John Beresford Tipton : Grievances against their fellow man.
[Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]
John Beresford Tipton : Let's see if we can devaluate the value of this young man's grudge with a million dollars.
[Anthony accepts the envelope]
-
Ralph McKnight : [Anthony has just finished issuing the million-dollar cashier's check, along with the explanation, to Ralph McKnight, as the two sit in McKnight's apartment] What do people usually say when you hand them a million dollars?
Michael Anthony : Oh, it varies. They sometimes stare at the check for quite a while, just as you're doing.
Ralph McKnight : I was counting the zeroes.
Michael Anthony : And then they say, 'Why me? Why give me a million dollars?' Even I can't answer that one. And then they say, 'What's the catch?'
Ralph McKnight : [Glancing at the document Anthony has placed before him] And this is the catch?
Michael Anthony : That paper simply states that you will tell no one, except your wife, where you got the money.
[Anthony reaches into his coat pocket for a pen]
Michael Anthony : If you do, it reverts to the donor.
Ralph McKnight : [Signing] On my pay at the dairy, I can't afford a wife.
[Anthony retrieves the agreement]
Ralph McKnight : But I know exactly what I'm going to do with this money.
[Getting serious]
Ralph McKnight : Mr. Anthony, I've got to tell this to someone. You see, it was... it was during the war...
[the remainder of this program consists of McKnight explaining his revenge plans to Anthony]
-
Michael Anthony : [to the viewers] This unsuspecting person was a young man named Ralph McKnight.
-
Michael Anthony : [to the viewers] My name is Michael Anthony. And until his death, I was John Beresford Tipton's executive secretary. Now Mr. Tipton was a multibillionaire which alone made him considerably different from most of us. But what made him entirely different from any man who ever lived, so far as I know, was his major hobby of giving a million dollars, taxes paid, to some unsuspecting person. This is Silverstone, John Beresford Tipton's 60,000-acre estate, almost a community in itself. It was here on a certain evening, that he called me toto his private study.
