Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • John Beresford Tipton : [Anthony enters the Tipton estate's private shooting range, where Tipton is practicing skeet shooting. Only his left arm is visible to viewers]  Mark!

[Tipton fires the rifle and strikes the skeet]

Michael Anthony : [Observing as he arrives]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Yes, Mike. You know, there are a great many moments in a man's life that demand good nerves and a steady hand.

[Tipton loads his rifle with ammunition as he prepares for the next round]

John Beresford Tipton : Some of these occasions are vital, while others may be as trivial as the demonstration you just saw.

    Michael Anthony : Yes, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : Our new millionaire is an unsung soldier, whose life has often depended on his courage and his steadiness of hand under the most dangerous of circumstances.

[Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Find him, Mike, and give his this.

    [Anthony accepts the envelope]

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony has been waiting in the living room while Mrs. Carroll greets her husband, who has just returned home after learning his discharge is imminent]  Captain Carroll?

Doris Carroll : [Giddy from the excitement of the discharge]  I'm sorry, darling, but you knocked everything else out of my mind. This is Mr. Michael Anthony, and he tells me he's come all the way from the States just to talk to you.

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : Really? What on earth for?

Michael Anthony : I've, ah, brought you something, Captain. Something I had to deliver to you personally.

[Opens his briefcase to retrieve a document]

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : Sounds important. What is it?

    Michael Anthony : This.

    [Hands a check to Carroll]

    Capt. Jonathan Carroll : It's a cashier's check for $1,000,000.

    Doris Carroll : What?

    [Looking at the check]

Doris Carroll : John, look, the... the check's made out to you.

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : There must be some mistake.

Michael Anthony : I assure you, there's no mistake.

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : But who would give me a million dollars?

Michael Anthony : The donor insists on remaining anonymous, Captain, and I might also add, he's already paid all the taxes. The entire million dollars is yours, but there are certain conditions.

[Carroll has grown suspicious, walks to a phone, and dials a number]

Michael Anthony : Whom are you calling, Captain?

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : The Military Police, Mr. Anthony, or whatever your name is. Stay where you are!

Michael Anthony : As you wish. But may I suggest that you examine my credentials before doing anything foolish. You'll find I'm not an enemy agent. There is a small leather folder in the inside lining pocket. If you will just glance at it.

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : [Carroll hangs up the phone and looks into the briefcase, with Mrs. Carroll looking over his shoulder]  I'm sorry. This is just so incredible.

Michael Anthony : Don't apologize. You've just displayed an admirable conditioned reflex, and one that I rather expected. In the center section of the case, there's a simple agreement. Will you take it out, read it, show it to Mrs. Carroll, and then sign it?

[Carroll reads the document, again with Mrs. Carroll looking over his shoulder]

Michael Anthony : Are the conditions perfectly clear?

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : Yes. It... it says I'm not to tell anyone how I got the money or how much it is. If I violate this agreement, the donor will take back whatever money is left.

Michael Anthony : Precisely. Now if you will sign right there.

[Carroll signs the pledge and Anthony recovers the paper]

Michael Anthony : Thank you very much, Captain.

    [Nods]

Michael Anthony : Mrs. Carroll. It has been an honor and a privilege. And I hope that the money will bring you nothing but happiness.

    Doris Carroll : Thank you.

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : Yeah, thanks.

[Anthony has opened the door and is about to exit]

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : Goodbye, Mr. Anthony, and about that phone call...

Michael Anthony : Don't give it a thought, Captain. Goodbye.

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : [Captain Carroll grabs the doorknob]  Thanks again.

    [closes the door]

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers, holding a file folder]  Here is the case history that developed after Mr. Tipton gave me the envelope that day at the skeet range. It was addressed to Captain Jonathan Carroll, US Army Ordinance, Tokyo, Japan.

    [Reviewing file]

Michael Anthony : The bitter struggle in Korea had just been concluded. For Captain Carroll and many of the other members our armed forces, this meant a return to Japan, even a resumption of family life. Nevertheless, the deadly peril inherent in the Captain's duties did not end with the cessation of hostilities.

  • Michael Anthony : .

    [to the viewers]

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony, and I was, for some period of time, executive secretary to the late John Beresford Tipton. Mr. Tipton was a multibillionaire and an anonymous contributor to many private and public charities. But entirely apart from these donations, he would also frequently, and with secrecy, give a million dollars - $1,000,000, tax-free - to some individual who was a complete stranger to him. This is Silverstone, Mr. Tipton's estate, a retreat of some 60,000 acres. One morning I was told that Mr. Tipton wished to see me. He was skeet-shooting, on his private range.
