William Hopper: Capt. Carroll

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony has been waiting in the living room while Mrs. Carroll greets her husband, who has just returned home after learning his discharge is imminent]  Captain Carroll?

Doris Carroll : [Giddy from the excitement of the discharge]  I'm sorry, darling, but you knocked everything else out of my mind. This is Mr. Michael Anthony, and he tells me he's come all the way from the States just to talk to you.

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : Really? What on earth for?

Michael Anthony : I've, ah, brought you something, Captain. Something I had to deliver to you personally.

[Opens his briefcase to retrieve a document]

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : Sounds important. What is it?

    Michael Anthony : This.

    [Hands a check to Carroll]

    Capt. Jonathan Carroll : It's a cashier's check for $1,000,000.

    Doris Carroll : What?

    [Looking at the check]

Doris Carroll : John, look, the... the check's made out to you.

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : There must be some mistake.

Michael Anthony : I assure you, there's no mistake.

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : But who would give me a million dollars?

Michael Anthony : The donor insists on remaining anonymous, Captain, and I might also add, he's already paid all the taxes. The entire million dollars is yours, but there are certain conditions.

[Carroll has grown suspicious, walks to a phone, and dials a number]

Michael Anthony : Whom are you calling, Captain?

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : The Military Police, Mr. Anthony, or whatever your name is. Stay where you are!

Michael Anthony : As you wish. But may I suggest that you examine my credentials before doing anything foolish. You'll find I'm not an enemy agent. There is a small leather folder in the inside lining pocket. If you will just glance at it.

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : [Carroll hangs up the phone and looks into the briefcase, with Mrs. Carroll looking over his shoulder]  I'm sorry. This is just so incredible.

Michael Anthony : Don't apologize. You've just displayed an admirable conditioned reflex, and one that I rather expected. In the center section of the case, there's a simple agreement. Will you take it out, read it, show it to Mrs. Carroll, and then sign it?

[Carroll reads the document, again with Mrs. Carroll looking over his shoulder]

Michael Anthony : Are the conditions perfectly clear?

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : Yes. It... it says I'm not to tell anyone how I got the money or how much it is. If I violate this agreement, the donor will take back whatever money is left.

Michael Anthony : Precisely. Now if you will sign right there.

[Carroll signs the pledge and Anthony recovers the paper]

Michael Anthony : Thank you very much, Captain.

    [Nods]

Michael Anthony : Mrs. Carroll. It has been an honor and a privilege. And I hope that the money will bring you nothing but happiness.

    Doris Carroll : Thank you.

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : Yeah, thanks.

[Anthony has opened the door and is about to exit]

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : Goodbye, Mr. Anthony, and about that phone call...

Michael Anthony : Don't give it a thought, Captain. Goodbye.

Capt. Jonathan Carroll : [Captain Carroll grabs the doorknob]  Thanks again.

    [closes the door]
