We're all gonna evolve into jaw breakers!!! Or is it a disco ball? Okay, this brilliant and ultimately quite profound episode is a sequel to the great "Zygote Rhythm", and as such it naturally sees the return of evil freak genius of the future Professor Eggbert Zygote and his excellently malevolent voice, as done by Kenneth Mars, who despite only having a mere two appearances on the show, more than made his villain memorable and a fun addition to the colourful rogues gallery of the series. He probably did the voice-work for both episodes at once, but I thought he seemed more relaxed and confident in his voicing this time around. I find the theme of this episode more interesting than Zygote's earlier appearance because before he was all about regressing all kinds of creatures backwards on the evolutionary ladder, and now all his vast and twisted mental powers are entirely focused on the future - his own mostly! It was interesting to see an African American character on the show, even if his tough street kid attitude was a touch on the stereotypical side. The symbol on the back of his jacket is from the arcade classic Space Invaders! Zygote is so much more interesting and formidable an opponent as a monstrous levitating green creature with a huge freaky veiny brain-pan! Also he has a mysterious metal hand now, it never says what became of his old hand.. I love the whole bizarre sequence where Zygote invades Max's mind and tries to make him fall prey to his own inner fears and doubts, as it's great fun to see the warped dark versions of Virgil and Norman that are out to kill Max! It makes me laugh when evil-Norman refers to him as "Bratty-One!" Also of note is the priceless demon-Mom scene which I'd say is a good candidate for the scariest moment of the whole series! Kenneth Mars is really brilliant during all of that sequence, he shows a little of the range of his voice when he's toying with Max and he lowers his tone and sounds terrifically sinister and menacing. And the mind-blowing climactic scene where Max dupes Zygote into defeating himself by evolving him beyond the physical into a being of pure thought that cares not for revenge or evolution - only for the beauty and music of the universe... It's just plain one of the more awe-inspiring moments in the series. I mean to evolve into the infinite...that'd be a trip and a half! I much prefer Max's ideal for human evolution over Zygote's. A perfectly fantastic blast of an episode and I love it! I swear when these things are great, they're like freaking Mozart to me! bye-bye.
