Dobie has just been hired as the college radio station's new disc jockey, on the vow to the station faculty advisor, Dr. Burkhart, that he will not be enticed by "payola" i.e. kickbacks. Enter Eddie Baker, who has just been released from prison after a three year incarceration for such activities. Although he vowed to go straight, his Ma convinces him that they should earn their living by pushing the recordings of folk music singer, Prudence Virtue, formerly known as chorus girl Fifi LaVerne. They are banking on Dobie being a dumb naive college kid who wouldn't know payola if it slapped him on the face. Not knowing exactly what payola is could get Dobie into trouble of a different kind. Meanwhile, Zelda tries to further her own recording career with Dobie and Maynard's help.
