Andrew Duggan, Tom Drake and Ed Lauter make this worth seeing.
planktonrules22 December 2014
This episode of "Mannix" has a much better than usual list of supporting players. It stars Andrew Duggan--a very, very familiar and strong character actor who made a bazillion TV appearances during the 60s and 70s. Also included are the movie star Tom Drake ("Meet Me in St. Louis") and it marks Ed Lauter's TV debut. Who is Lauter? Well, check out his picture and you're bound to recognize him. After all, he had over 200 credits to his name! Together, these three alone make it well worth seeing this one.

The show begins with the General (Duggan) coming out of the shadows (literally) to hire Mannix to recover some incriminating photos. However, Mannix's troubles result in being bashed over the head (for the 300th time) and nearly killed. Through the course of the rest of the show, it becomes obvious that the photos of the General having an extra-marital affair is just a ruse--there's far more to the photos than that!

Apart from an ending which relies too much on an almost impossible shot by Mannix (using a snub-nosed .38 he makes a shot that would impress an Olympic shooter!), the show is exciting and well worth your time. Yet another better than average show from this long- running series.

Record-setting
pkfloydmh7 September 2021
This one is about an old Army buddy of Joe's who hires Joe to buy back a compromising film from the photographer who took the pictures.

This is an excellent and suspenseful episode with a well-written plot and intriguing mystery involving espionage, blackmail and murder. There are fine performances from the entire cast and lots of twists and turns.

Joe really needs to dump the convertible as once again the hoods were able to get his name and address from his car registration.

The total body count is five, which is a new record. The previous record was four, which happened in the previous episode (A Button for General D.) and in Duet for Three from season four. This is the first time ever that two consecutive episodes have had a body count of four or more.

Joe gets thumped on the head again and gets shot at many times but never hit. He also jumps out of a moving vehicle and then rolls down an embankment and smacks his head and lands in the hospital. He also takes another nasty fall down a hillside at the end after pretending to be shot.

There's an exciting and extended shootout to close out the episode and the hooligans put up a good fight but went down in the end.

This is now the fifth straight terrific episode, which is a first. The show is really hitting its stride now, with better writing, interesting plots, increasing body counts, fewer plot holes, and bigger and better stunts, chases, crashes, fight scenes and shootouts. I'm loving all of it.

Lenore Kasdorf, Coleen Gray, Kathie Browne, Roy Jenson, too
cpotato101028 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
There is not too much I can add to the previous review, other than there are other interesting actors in this episode as well.

A fit, 20-something Lenore Kasdorf, one of four shows she guest-starred in at the beginning of her career. BTW, she has more screen time than Ed Lauter. :-)

Veteran actress Coleen Gray, a good match for Andrew Duggan.

Star Trek alums Kathie Browne and Roy Jenson. Of course, both had many other parts in TV and movies, Kathie had 90 credits and Roy was very prolific, 211 credits.

Also, in one of many bit parts during the Mannix show's run, Harry Harvey Sr., playing the doctor near the beginning of the episode.

This episode is also one of eleven directed by his son, Harry Harvey Jr.

I do have one quibble, however: The MacGuffin of this episode, the film of Top Secret plans that everyone is seeking.

If these are really Top Secret plans, the General likely would not have been allowed to take them home. Or at least they would have been locked up when he was not actively using them.

Edit - I may have misused the term "MacGuffin" in this case. The film, sought by many, and ultimately destroyed, was not unimportant.

Joe refuses to learn the lesson of old buddies
Guad4223 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Joe, I say this as a friend - Stay away from your Korean War buddies! This is the fifth episode in which you have interacted with those old Army buddies and it has always turned out bad. A good cast help make this well done story even better. Andrew Duggan always brings appropriate gravitas to the proceedings. Kathie Browne was pretty and a good actress. Coleen Gray as the General's wife and Tom Drake are the other principal characters here and all four are making their only appearances on Mannix. As an aside, Kathie was married to Darren McGavin for over 30 years and he played the last "ol' army buddy" to mix it up with Mannix. The plot has been covered by other reviewers. The twist is what is really on the film and how it was gotten. The wife gets more sympathy than I would give her but at least Kathie gets her just desserts. The Army general shows his coolness under fire, but who needs him when you got "Deadeye Joe" on your side. One helluva shot. I have to say the bad guys give up pretty easily considering how hot they were to get the film. Mannix gets hit over the head (as always) but probably got paid so it evens out. Of course, if he did it for free for an old Army buddy, then he didn't get paid. A good episode worth the time.

THE GENERAL AND THE OTHER WOMAN?
tcchelsey18 May 2023
Andrew Duggan, who played General Eisenhower better than Eisenhower in so many films, yes, plays a general who is trying to get his hands on some pictures that DO NOT include his wife. The end result; blackmail and murder. Duggan usually bounced back and forth between MANNIX, CANNON and other cop shows. He was the perfect leader or nasty villain.

Enter Mannix, who has major cleanup to do. This is an excellent episode, written by Arthur Weiss, who wrote several good stories for the series, also associated with MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. He began his career writing adventures for SEA HUNT.

A memorable cast, headed by 50s movie star Colleen Gray (THE KILLING, KANSAS CITY CONFIDENTIAL) and MGM star Tom Drake (MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, LASSIE) who reportedly sold used cars on the side to supplement his income. Pretty Kathie Brown plays Carol, who was in all the famous Warner Brothers/ABC cop shows of the 50s and 60s.

Yes, I agree with the last reviewer. The thugs got Joe's name and address by simply looking in his car. Not the first time this has happened. In the money department; the general gives Joe $10,000 dollars for his work, which would equal about 77,000 dollars today!

Director Harry Harvey's famous dad plays Joe's doctor. Harvey, Sr portrayed the sheriff on the ROY ROGERS SHOW. This episode also marked the tv debut of Ed Lauter, who began his career as a stand up comedian. His death in 2013 from cancer resulted in a industry lawsuit; his family claimed he died from a rare asbestos that was found in most Hollywood studios, and is still pending.

The blue Lincoln going off the cliff and into the ocean is a WOW, even if another car was used.

Filmed at the ever beautiful Gulls Way Estate, which was built atop Latigo Point at Malibu, later owned by Pepperdine University and then sold to tv personality Dick Clark. FANTASY ISLAND was filmed there, along with many other tv shows. Good trivia question.

A noirish story with all the trimmings. Do not miss this. SEASON 5 EPISODE 11 remastered color CBS/Paramount dvd box set.
