Mannix hangs out with some obnoxious rich folks and gets bashed in the head...all in a days work.
planktonrules2 December 2015
When the show begins, there's a fancy-shmancy party going on aboard a HUGE yacht. Shots then ring out and the guests go running...and Ali Brumante is found with a gun in her hand and a body at her feet. Soon Mannix is brought in by the mega-wealthy Brumantes to look into the case. However, Mannix doesn't like being ordered around and is a bit hesitant to take the case. When he interviews Ali in jail, he's still not particularly eager to take the case because she isn't particularly nice and seems to feel that money talks...and that carries little weight with Mannix. Still, he does decide to investigate and finds the Brumante family less than cordial...yet they hired him! And, if it doesn't seem like it could get any worse, it does as baddies start bashing him over the head and taking shots at him. But as usual, our indestructible hero is apparently unfazed and un-brain damaged. Considering the dozens and dozens of times Joe Mannix is knocked out throughout the series, his brain should be tapioca! Can Joe sort it all out and figure out who did what in this episode?

This is a pretty normal episode despite Mannix working for the fourth richest man in America. It has the usual twists, turns, bonks on the head and the like. It's not a bad show in any way and the obnoxious rich folks angle made it a tad more interesting than usual...but not enough to make this a must-see. Just another typical "Mannix" outing in most every way and the indestructible detective once again saves the day and somehow survives.

THE PHILANDERING PLAYBOY ANGLE!
tcchelsey27 September 2022
A very good whodunit, and it will keep you guessing as to who pulled the job. The cast also wins this hands down. 10 Stars.

Christina "Tina" Sinatra, in a rare tv role, plays a member of the ultra wealthy, snobbish Bramante Family, where homicide strikes. Christine Belford, who was co-starring on BANACEK at the time, plays Alison -- suspected of murdering another snob --who probably deserved it anyway. Casare Danova is perfectly cast as Bruno. Love that name. Always fun to watch, with a dramatic flair.

So who do y'all think is guilty, emm?

Tina Sinatra did some acting in her time, and she was very good, encouraged to sing by her famous father, but left Hollywood to enter the business world, later to run her father's recording empire and archives. Look for terrific dead pan John Hillerman as Larry and a special appearance by silver haired Murray Matheson as "Snowy", also a regular on BANACEK.

This one moves and grooves with a 70s party scene at the start, and Joe gets konked on the head, as usual. Credit Harold Melford for writing this slice of human nature at its worst. He penned the first airplane disaster movie, FATE IS THE HUNTER (1964).

Applause to one of the best tv directors, Sutton Roley, who wrote 16 episodes for the show, also MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and STARSKY AND HUTCH.

SEASON 6 EPISODE 14 remastered color CBS/Paramount dvd box set.

A rare Tina Sinatra appearance
pkfloydmh19 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In this one, a woman is accused of murder and Joe is hired by her husband to find evidence that will prove she's innocent.

Unlike many episodes, the killer is not obvious and there are many possible suspects, so there's a genuine mystery here and some nice twists.

The performances from the entire cast are excellent, including Tina Sinatra in a rare television appearance. She only made a handful of them and only one more after this, so this is a rarity.

There are some obvious plot holes, like how did Joe know there was something in the fire extinguisher and how did he know Snowy was the killer and that Snowy was planning to steal the heroin? Where's the evidence of all this?

This one sets the record for the longest opening scene without Mike Connors appearing, at seven minutes.

This is the first mention of Albie in several years, although he doesn't actually appear. His last appearance was in Merry Go Round for Murder in season two.

There are a couple clichés - Joe gets clobbered in the head again and shot at but not hit.

There are some good action scenes but unfortunately one of them is played in slow motion, which completely ruins it.

This one has a really good mystery and great performances from the entire cast but it's taken down a few notches by the obvious plot holes and clichés and one of the action scenes being played in slow motion, but it's still slightly better than average.

Warning: Spoilers
This is a typical Mannix episode. A murder on a rich family's yacht leads to friend of the family Snowy Bartlett (Murray Matheson) suggesting they hire Joe to help clear the wife. She (Christine Belford) is caught with a gun standing over the body of the slimy playboy that are in all these type of plots. Her husband, Bruno (Cesare Danova) does hire Joe and then clashes with him on several occasions. Tina Sinatra as the daughter and John Hillerman as the gossip columnist are onboard to provide some red herrings. Hillerman ends up dead for his trouble. Drugs come into it and Joe get to the bottom of the sorted story.

I give the writers credit for two different items in this story. The wife is completely unlikeable and you find yourself wishing she would be guilty and the other is the nickname "Snowy". Never heard that before. As often happens with cop or PI shows, there are gaps in logic. Snowy is the one who recommended hiring Mannix so he clearly knew him and his reputation. Since Snowy is also the murderer, he recommended hiring a guy with a 100% success rate in closing cases to try to catch him and, sure enough, Joe does exactly that. Was the first choice Sherlock Holmes but he was busy? You would think Snowy would recommend the Three Stooges or something along that line.

The cast is fine but the entire show comes across as a bit robotic and "by the numbers". Pretty much everyone is unlikable. Belford and Matheson would be together in Banacek during this same timeframe and both are better there.

Joe gets hit over the head and does get paid so I guess this is a win for the big guy. He should stick to back alleys and shabby bars. You meet a better class of people there.

Dull story with very unsympathetic/ dull characters
glitterrose2 July 2022
Needless to say this cast didn't have the luck Robert Conrad had. Robert's episode was a good one and his character was such a jerk you wish somebody had killed his character off. But his character was at least strong enough you did have some thoughts about him. The people in this episode were so dull they might as well have been saying 'blah blah blah' through the entire storyline. I didn't like the wife's attitude toward Mannix when he came to talk to her in the slammer. This man's taking time out of his day to come talk to you, try not to show your butt. If the man wants to see your face and eyes, keep the sunglasses off your face. And I'm not even being snarky with that bit. I'd also want to see a person's eyes and face so I could possibly see some flicker of guilt. And the way that woman wore her sunglasses was so stupid. I can see wearing them on top of your head if you have them on but don't want them on your eyes. It's like she wanted to position them on her forehead?

So yeah, this was a dud. Only highlight for me was Snowy dancing and just being relieved Mannix didn't touch the face and hair of any woman on this episode. Thankfully he's got better taste than that.
