A MAN CALLED SHENANDOAH – "Aces and Kings" – 1966 This is episode 28 of the 1965-66 western series, A MAN CALLED SHENANDOAH. The series starred Robert Horton. Horton is a man who suffered the loss of his memory after receiving a head wound. He is now searching the west for clues as to his identity.
Horton rides into a small town and ties up at the local saloon. He needs something to wash the trail dust down. Inside, Horton is soon approached by tavern girl, Antoinette Bower. Would Horton buy her a drink? While the two are sipping their drinks, Bower comments on Horton's ring. Would he consider selling it? No, Horton replies as he orders another drink. Listening in to Horton and Bower is card sharp, Steve Brodie. He steps up and offers Horton 40 dollars to sell the ring to him. Horton again says no, finishes his drink and heads to the local hotel.
Bower and Brodie it seems are a pair of crooks. Bower gets men drunk while Brodie beats them at the card table. Horton's ring was just a talking point to get him interested in gambling. The two look for another mark.
Horton, fresh from a bath and a change of clothes returns to the saloon for a steak and a few more shots of whiskey. While eating, he takes in the card game at the next table. Bower and Brodie have found a new mark, local rancher, Strother Martin. Martin is soon cleaned out and accuses Brodie of some sneaky playing. A derringer is quickly produced and pointed at Martin. "Would you care to repeat that?" Says a smiling Brodie. Martin shakes his head and quickly leaves.
Horton finishes his steak and asks to join the game. Horton turns out to be quite the card player himself, and soon takes several hundred dollars off Brodie. Brodie is not amused and goes for his pocket gun again. Horton, however, expected the move and has his .45 pointed at Brodie. It is now Brodie's turn to leave. Horton has a few more drinks and decides to call it a night.
As he is walking back to the hotel, he gets a whack to the back of the head with a large piece of wood. The blow was delivered by Bower, who quickly empties Horton's pockets and for good measure takes his ring. She then hightails it to her room to count the take. Several minutes later, Brodie finds the still senseless Horton sprawled in the alley. He now does a quick check of Horton's pockets. Finding nothing, he realizes that it must have been his partner, Bower who got to Horton first. He now hurries to their room for a talk with Bower about a split.
Horton comes to and also checks his pockets. No cash! When he sees his ring gone, he knows exactly what has happened and who did it. He pulls his weapon and heads for the hotel. Up the stairs he goes 3 steps at a time. He boots in Brodie and Bower's room door. Bower and Brodie are in the middle of an argument over Horton's money. Brodie shoots Bower and then turns on Horton. Horton fires first. He takes back his goods and leaves. What a day! (B/W)
