Character and Heart Revealed
artandpam26 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is not the first to provide deeper insights into the characters of our heroes, but it is one of the best at doing so. Higgins truly shines as his painfully shy side, and his absolute discretion, combine against his deep desire. In the midst of this emotional conflict, it is almost inevitable that Higgins will lash out at Magnum. And when he does, Magnum does not explode but directly and briefly tells Higgins he has crossed an important line in their relationship. Higgins' apology is as sincere as it is brief, one of the finest, most character-revealing scenes in the entire series is over, and the viewer is left to savor what has passed between the two. Extraordinary what memorable moments can be produced by excellent actors who know the hearts of their characters. Succinct, insightful writing, too.

Guest starring Jane Merrow

Warning: Spoilers
Acclaimed British actress Jane Merrow, real name Jane Josephine Meirowsky, guest stars as a duchess in distress in this episode, Letter to a Duchess. We see Higgins and his flashbacks and infatuation with the duchess, and it makes us wonder what he would have been like with a family and kids.

Thomas and Higgins have some tension between them because the duchess ends up having dinner with Thomas based on an unsigned letter Higgins penned. Anyway, I'm enjoying watching the early seasons of Magnum, P. I. (but I have no interest in watching the reboot). It's hard to believe this episode debuted four decades ago.
