- A famous prize-fighter, "Gentleman Joe" Cavanaugh (Pat McNamara) (Undefeated middleweight champion for 9 yrs) (he owns a restaurant now, where many celebrities visit), is coming to visit the 4077th. Major Robert Hatch (Earl Boen) from Army Information tells the MASH officers that Joe is on a goodwill tour and will spend 5 hrs at MASH 4077. He will shake hands with the wounded and have lunch (he only eats steaks). Klinger is able to requisition 60 prime steaks from Supply by mentioning the memo on Joe's visit to Korea. Klinger realizes that this memo is gold as supply has been ordered to provide anything to the units to make Joe's visit comfortable. Joe arrives and is very pleasant in front of the public. However, in private, he chews out Hatch for not having luxury transportation or proper accommodations during his tour. He is a jerk.. He doesn't like hopping from one unit to another, pumping hands with the wounded and so on. Mulcahy is a childhood fan of Joe and defends him saying that even Mulcahy would be tested if he came on the back of a several hrs long uncomfortable jeep ride.
Harch wants Houlihan to pose for a few shots with Joe, but she refuses. Houlihan is put off by boxers. At lunch, Joe has a stroke while toasting his visit to MASH. Hawkeye takes Joe under his case. He has blood in his spinal fluid and even Hawkeye is not able to do anything to save him. Hatch wants to inform the press, but Potter warns him to keep it low down so as to provide privacy and rest to Joe, in his final hours. There is a chance that he might die in 3-4 hrs. Hatch doesn't care for Joe and calls in the entire press corps. Hatch arrives with a whole busload of reporters at midnight and wakes up the entire camp to do chores to accommodate the press corps. Everyone is irritated as Pierce, serving as his doctor, becomes spokesman to the press. Turns out Hawkeye loves the spotlight on himself and forgets to mention the MASH 4077 that is helping him care for Joe. BJ and Winchester razz on Hawkeye for basking in the spotlight for doing practically nothing. They say that everyone in camp is sick of Hawkete throwing himself at the press vultures. The press corps takes over Klinger's office and he doesn't even have a place to sleep.
Father Mulcahy is upset, since Gentleman Joe was his childhood hero. Joe was the one who inspired Mulcahy to defend himself against bullies, while still maintaining his principles. Wounded come in and in an act of pure genius BJ tries an electric shock on a patient to revive his heart. He had read about this in a magazine and tries it on the patient with Potter's permission. The technique works and the person lives. Hawkeye shares this story with the reporters in the mess tent and they aren't impressed at all Joe dies. But Klinger uses the memo to order a whole lot of gourmet food and a fridge to keep it all fresh.
