When the Spirit Moves You
Hitchcoc19 March 2015
When an elderly Korean man is brought into camp, he resists treatment because he fears evil spirits. At this point, things go wrong. Potters cigarette lighter stops working, blood pressure machines malfunction, the PA system goes down, and lights go out in the Operation Room. The granddaughter of the old man tells Hawkeye that the only way to get the guy to agree to surgery is to purge the camp by way of an exorcism. Of course, Frank is aghast. He asks what the man upstairs is going to think and Potter says, "You mean General MacArthur!" Father Mulcahy, being such a cool character, sees God at work in mysterious ways. Of course, it's going to work out. Buy it or not!

Three years after The Exorcist
safenoe31 August 2020
A kind of feelgood episode, and it would have had a sly twist if Linda Blair had a cameo, especially as this episode was screened three years after The Exorcist.

Superstition , spirits and spirituality

Warning: Spoilers
Things are going haywire at the camp and Radar and Klinger are into good luck charms while an elderly patient needs an operation. He fell down purposely it seems to ward off spirits and is hit by a truck. His granddaughter says he will only allow the operation after an exorcism. Potter gives the go ahead despite Burns trying to stop it . Meanwhile Father Mulcahy is enthusiastic and shows his curiosity and tolerance . I really adore him. The woman doing the exorcism is quite dressed up with bright colors and an interesting hat . Potter ask Mulcahy what he thinks he says the woman looks to be a cross between a bishop and a bullfighter!

It seems to work everything that went haywire is working again.

Bizarre Episode Out of Nowhere
craigbenting1 May 2021
When I was a kid, everybody in my house loved every episode of MASH, and as an adult and father of three, everybody in my house loves every episode. I can't count how many times we've watched every single episode in order, from the first to the very last. We watch the Christmas episode in December every year, especially on Christmas Eve as we wrap presents through the night.

Except this episode. Watching every episode in order as we always do, this episode is so bizarre and out of place that we usually skip it and move onto the next one, Hawk's Nightmare. The few times I've tried to watch it myself to find out why I always skip it, I never make it more than about half-way.

We have no problems with other cultures and other ways of thinking -- my wife is Vietnamese and my siser-in-law is Korean. Most of the men in my family were in the Army, stationed in Viet Nam, South Korea, and the middle east.

Maybe that's the problem. The "exorcism" near the end is such a horri-bad display of a ceremony that visually and technically isn't even close to reality. It's painfully embarrassing like watching native Americans in a 50's western. Or like watching white people playing Asians in 60's movies, complete with modified "slant-eyes".

That being said, the first half of the episode is typical great-MASH, but it's not worth it to change it halfway through to avoid the pain in the second half.
