Diethylstilbestrol (DES) was an actual drug often given to pregnant women from the 1940s to 1971 to prevent miscarriage and similar complications. Studies as early as the 1950s indicated that the drug was harmful, with the FDA telling doctors to quit prescribing it in 1971. It remained in use in Europe until 1978.
