It was established that Lumpy Rutherford is older than Wally and Eddie since Lumpy's first appearance in the series in season one. In this episode, Eddie tells June that Lumpy has been held back a year in school. This plot device allows Wally, Eddie and Lumpy to be friends in the same high school class for the remainder of the series.
Mr. Gannon invokes the name of Polonius when he writes on the paper towel a passage the character uttered in William Shakespeare's play "Hamlet," Act I, Scene III.
Lumpy is shown to be left-handed.
When The Beaver is helping Wally study for his history exam, Wally is seated in the den in front of a bookcase. Among the identifiable books on the shelves are: "The Other Side of the Corn", by Pierre Boulle (New York: Vanguard, 1958); "Jacob", by Irving Fineman (New York: Random House, 1941); "A Treasury of Biography", by Edgar Johnson (New York: Howell Book House, 1941); and "Maggie-Now", by Betty Smith (New York: Harper, 1958).
