- Inspired to become a reporter by a visiting foreign news correspondent, Beaver runs to the local newspaper after school to apply for the open delivery boy position. But the job goes to a boy who pretends to be sick to get out of school early and Beaver, unwilling to "rat" on the dishonest kid, hopes that the new carrier will make so many mistakes that the paper will fire him.—shepherd1138
- After hearing someone in that profession speak at his school, Beaver decides that he wants to be a newspaper reporter, most specifically a foreign correspondent, when he grows up. As that correspondent stated that he started his interest as such when he was a paper boy growing up, Beaver decides to get a paper route, and knows that their current route requires a new delivery boy. However, a dejected Beaver learns that the newspaper has already hired someone else, namely a boy new to the area, he who skipped his last class in order to make it to the newspaper office first. Beaver wants the job so badly that he wants his father to call the newspaper office and complain about the service, which Ward refuses to do. The new delivery boy starts out being quick and efficient, but that early promising start quickly deteriorates. Both Beaver and Ward go through different phases about how to deal with the new paper boy based on service, and based on finding out who the paper boy actually is.—Huggo
