Could Have Been Much Funnier
ccthemovieman-122 January 2007
Beaver has a bad dream, yelling and everything and waking up everyone in the house. He dreamed he and Larry were being chased by ghosts. It's explained to him there are no such things as ghosts, but Beaver mentions the Cooper house down the street. The kids say it's haunted so, of course, Beaver believes that. Wally tells him he's a baby and "just go to sleep."

The next day Beaver and Larry are walking home from school and are stationed outside the Cooper mansion. A lady comes out and says "whoo hoo" to the boys, trying to get their attention. The boys think it's a witch and run off. That night, June gets a call from Mrs. Cooper (a woman who had been away but just returned to that house to clean it up and sell it) asking if Beaver would be interested in walking her dog for 50 cents a day. The deal is made but Beaver doesn't know until after the fact that it is the Cooper house, and now he's scared. Wally urges him to go ahead with the job or their dad is going to think he's a big baby.

With a box of cookies, Beaver bribes Larry to come with him the first day, but Larry runs off. Beaver makes it inside the house but doesn't do much better.

In the end, the lesson is not to judge people on rumors or even first impressions. That's a good lesson but the story wasn't as entertaining as it looked like it was going to be. They could have made this a very funny episode, but it didn't turn out that way.

You know there ain't no ghosts (or witches) in Mayfield

Warning: Spoilers
Beaver seems to having a nightmare and wakes everyone. Beaver was in a castle with Wally and they were being chased by a ghost. Ward tries to reassure Beaver it was just a dream. Beaver asks Wally about the old Cooper place, isn't it haunted. Wally says no, it's just an old house.

On his way home from school, Beaver and Larry pass the old Cooper house. Beaver says Wally says as long as he can recall no one has ever lived there. Beaver says if anyone did they would have to be a witch. The door opens and a woman comes out and calls to the boys. Beaver and Larry take off like they are being chased by a witch.

June gets a call from Mrs. Cooper who has a job for Beaver, walking her dog. Mrs. Cooper has moved back home to decide whether to fix the house up, sell it, or tear it down. Beaver is excited about earning fifty cents a day until he hears it's Mrs. Cooper, then he doesn't want the job. Beaver insists to Wally that the woman is a witch. Wally says he will go with Beaver but then remembers he has a ball game. Beaver says he will be nice to the dog because once upon a time it was a little boy.

Beaver is trying to bribe Larry with cookies so he will help walk the dog. The closer they get to the house the more frightened Beaver gets, especially as Larry is telling a story about Hansel and Gretel. Beaver has to go to the door alone as Larry has taken off. Beaver tries the old intercom to get into the house. As Beaver stands in the entrance hall, he gets more and more nervous. Beaver opens a door and sees a bunch of furniture covered in sheets. Then as he turns, he sees himself in the mirror and runs off.

Wally comes home and June and Ward are thinking about Beaver. Beaver came home and went right upstairs and didn't say anything about walking Mrs. Cooper's dog. Mrs. Cooper arrives at the house because Beaver never stayed to walk the dog. Beaver came in but then ran off. Wally takes Ward aside and tells him that Beaver thinks the old house is haunted and that Mrs. Cooper is a witch.

Ward tries to smooth the situation over with Mrs. Cooper but it sort of slides into embarrassing. How do you explain to someone that their nine-year old son thinks they are a witch? Ward tells Beaver that Mrs. Cooper was just there and is just a nice old lady. Beaver says that's probably the shape she takes for parents. June is upset that they can't seem to disabuse Beaver of thinking of Mrs. Cooper as a witch. Ward says you can't stop someone from believing something.

Next day Ward comes home to find Beaver has a dog. It's Mrs. Cooper's. She met Beaver in a pet store and now Beaver is OK with everything. But he is confused about why people think stuff about people. Ward tries to explain but maybe for now it's just best to let Beaver enjoy walking the dog.

A cute episode that tries to deal with silly superstitions and unfounded beliefs. I like the message but can't be sure if even in the 50's it was clearly understood.

I believe some key scenes were cut to fit in additional commercial time.

It's the Munsters house!

Warning: Spoilers
Miss Cooper (Lillian Bronson) is the epitome of a sweet lady. Witch? I like these stories where there's no bullying, name calling, belittling by other kids. Miss Cooper's house has a long history in classic tv. Haunted house episodes are always great. Larry again is a funny, but bad influence on Beaver.

ONE WITCH PER CUSTOMER, PLEASE!
tcchelsey31 October 2023
I always thought apple-eating Larry Mondello was to Beaver what Eddie Haskell was to Wally -- a work of art! Usually, Larry would have a "suggestion" that would get Beave in trouble, and then deny, deny deny everything. He was one of those types who played dumb and innocent, but was actually the smartest one of the bunch!

Here, the rumors are flying about the old Cooper house down the street. Is it really haunted? Mrs. Cooper (Played by Lillian Bronson) returns to open the house, and needs someone to walk her dog --and is she a WITCH???

Of course, Larry plays a part in the rumor mill, only making things worse for Beave. OMG. Best Halloween scene has the Beave entering the old house, and all the strange noises.... For a few seconds, it reminded me of Alfred Hitchcock! Kind of creepy.

By the way, the Cooper house, with some extra handiwork, later became the famous home of the MUNSTERS.

A fun story written by George Tibbles, who wrote about half of the classic episodes for MY THREE SONS. This was the only episode Lillian Bronson appeared in, a very popular actress. She was cast in many classic movies, such as GASLIGHT, CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT, and made tv history as being the first woman cast on PERRY MASON to play a judge. That is an excellent trivia question!

TRICK OR TREAT goofy stuff with the Beave and Larry. SEASON 2 EPISODE 12 remastered dvd box set.

It Sure Looks Spooky

(*Beaver quote*) - "It was really scary. My feet were running, but I wasn't moving."

The old Cooper house is believed to be haunted. It has been unoccupied for a number of years.

When old Miss Cooper returns to Mayfield and moves into the house, Beaver and his fickle friends are all convinced that she is a witch.

When Beaver steps inside the Cooper house he is frightened out of his wits, but he ends up walking Miss Cooper's dog anyway.

Where's Eddie Haskel
LukeCoolHand28 June 2022
This was one of the poorer episodes of Leave it to Beaver. From the title I thought it would be a real hoot like the episode with the exact same title on The Andy Griffith Show - but no. The writing seemed lazy and the episode was quite boring and sort of all over the place. Really starting to seem like the 2nd season was the poorest and had about 26 episodes in a row without Eddie Haskel. Don't know where he was or why but maybe that was part of the problem. I did not watch the show growing up but tried it as an adult years ago and started with the 2nd season and quit watching. That's probably why I didn't watch it much then. Be so glad when the 3rd season starts and Eddie Haskel returns.
