How do you get to Carnegie Hall? We know the answer, right.

Warning: Spoilers
After reading an article about typewriters and how it can help to improve grades, Gilbert suggests Beaver ask his dad to get him one. Ward is for anything that will improve grades, but Beaver has shown little ability to stick with anything. What was it, two weeks before the clarinet made it to the closet. The ping-pong table, three weeks before being stored away in the garage. Beaver's grades must be bad because Ward gives in pretty quickly. Even Gilbert is shocked that Beaver got it so quickly. Beaver is trying the first lesson when Gilbert stops by, both discover learning to type isn't easy.

After a few days, Wally finds Beaver completing a homework with a pencil. What happened to the typewriter? It's hard to type. Eddie Haskell stops by to borrow money off Wally, but Wally is tapped out. For a dollar, Eddie will type the assignment; he will be sure to misspell a few words so it looks like a little creepy kid did it. We know this isn't a good idea: Beaver doesn't have enough money to pay to have all his assignments typed. Eventually Beaver will have to confess and disappoint Ward. But bigger question is where and when did Eddie learn to do something like typing. Even Beaver figured Eddie was just a wise guy who really couldn't do anything.

Next day, Mr. Bailey is impressed with Beaver's composition. Beaver was awarded a B+; Mr. Bailey even attached a note for Ward and June. When Ward and June read the letter, they are very pleased; Beaver not only did well, but his parents are commended for showing interest in getting Beaver the typewriter. Now Beaver has a stack of assignments that are expected to be typed. Gilbert comes by and learns the truth about the typewriter and Eddie. Eddie comes by looking for Wally, when he sees Beaver is in trouble he offers his services. Beaver doesn't want to use him anymore; it's cheating. Eddie disables the typewriter so Beaver will have an excuse for not typing. I wonder if when we grow up if we will be as smart as Eddie, says Gilbert. I'd better not, states Beaver, because if I do Wally says he'll throttle me.

Mr. Bailey is disappointed to see Beaver is back to longhand with his usual erasures and errors and general sloppiness. He hopes the typewriter is fixed soon. When Wally comes home he sees Beaver working hard at learning to type. In the meantime, June has been to school for a parent teacher meeting and learned that according to Mr. Bailey the typewriter is broken. But Ward and June can hear the typewriter. Ward goes upstairs to investigate, and Beaver confesses all. He doesn't want his dad to have a rat for a son, so he is determined to learn to type. For now, he will also have to confess to Mr. Bailey. If there is any punishment, Mr. Bailey will determine it.

Several days later Wally finds Beaver pounding the keys. Beaver is actually learning to type. Even Beaver is surprised. He ponders if it's possible for people to keep trying to master something and suddenly discover they're experts. They could end up musicians or professional baseball players. If that's the case then perhaps Beaver should take a break and use his baseball glove and bat. Not now says Wally as he pushes Beaver back down to his chair. Beaver still needs to learn typing.

But Beaver hears the siren call of his baseball bat and glove, we are left to ponder if the typewriter will be mastered or will it end up in the closet with the clarinet.

The Cleavers go high tech...

... at least for that era.

Beaver is getting lower grades on his compositions because of his poor penmanship. Beaver then sees an ad for a new typewriter and is really excited about the possibility of getting one and learning to type. His father, skeptical that this will turn out any different than Beaver's other enthusiasms, is persuaded by the possibility that Beaver might get better grades as a result of typing his work.

But the typing is not going that well, and Beaver has an English paper he must turn in at school the next day. Enter stage left, Eddie Haskell. While Wally is downstairs on the phone to Mary Ellen Rodgers, Eddie offers to type Beaver's paper for him for a dollar. Eddie convinces Beaver that this is not really cheating since the content of the paper is Beaver's original work. And Eddie turns out to be an excellent typist - too good in fact. Beaver gets a good grade on his paper and a note goes home to his parents complimenting the difference his typing has made in his presentation. But then Beaver has an even longer assignment to type - What now, that expectations have been set so high? Watch and find out.

From a historical standpoint, I was surprised the Cleaver household did not have a typewriter and that it seemed like a household purchase that required weighty debate. So I turned to a thread on typewriter history. There I learned that a 1962 Royal Safari typewriter cost 110 dollars which would be about 1200 dollars in 2024.

It was also interesting that the school allowed such uneven competition in these days of extreme equality - that Beaver could compete for good grades with a typewritten report versus kids who did not have a typewriter and turned in handwritten papers. Small potatoes, I guess, versus today when teachers have to wonder if AI wrote a student's paper!

What happened to the typewriter from Season 2
Artanis5921 March 2024
Just three years earlier Beaver found an old typewriter in the house and had Gus the firemen repair it. Wally was jealous, because it originally belong to him, they agreed that Beaver could use it and he started a daily newspaper. This episode was much more funnier since it included Larry Mondello in the season five episode the old typewriter isn't mentioned and Gilbert is the culprit that convinces Beaver to ask his father buy a new one. This is just a rehash of old ideas that don't come off as funny. Highlight of the episode is watching Eddie Haskell, finding out he's an excellent typist. Still enjoyable.

Playing The Game Of Deception
StrictlyConfidential24 December 2020
(*Gilbert Bates quote*) - "Golly, Mr. Cleaver, you sure are good to Beaver."

Beaver wants a typewriter and he actually convinces his father to buy him one.

But, as with everything else that Beaver has asked for, he loses interest in using the typewriter really quickly.

What follows is a typical story-line in this 5th season of this tired TV series.

Lifeless episode

Eddie's funny 2 minutes on screen can't save a flat episode. Writers running out of fresh ideas. So they keep copying previous episode themes. Season 5 has a ton of clunkers.
