Spring Byington to the rescue
bkoganbing19 January 2018
One thing that was a constant in the Laramie series was that Jess Harper was always running into people from his bad old days. In this case it's Adam West who is riding with one nasty outlaw played by Dennis Patrick and he wants Robert Fuller in on it.

But Fuller tries to prevent things and he runs into thick as a brick sheriff Roy Barcroft who just takes an instant dislike to him. Fuller also finds himself in the jackpot that he was trying to save West from.

This show features Spring Byington of all people coming to Fuller's rescue, her and saloon girl Kathie Browne who is West's squeeze. Byington's scenes with Barcroft are very funny.

Reason enough to see this Laramie episode.

Not bad but as usual features only one lead...

Warning: Spoilers
This wasn't a bad story but it was hard to believe Jess would be stupid enough to have anything to do with this old acquaintance. Any town with a sheriff like that one should equally be departed from as soon as possible. I was surprised he'd been able to wire Daisy for help but it was thanks to her ingenuity and a bad guy's girlfriend that Jess escaped. I didn't see any trial featured where he was found guilty of anything by the way, despite being sentenced to hang! HOWEVER..! The habit of using one of the main leads while the other is absent (completely so, in this episode.. Slim is "on a hunting trip with Andy" apparently- so God knows who's attending to the stage) reduces the effect and the enjoyment, a lot of which lies in the interaction between Slim and Jess. I found it hard to believe the claim of Mr. Fuller in interviews when he said they both worked 12 hours a day, 5 days a week. John Smith must've had the full week off in this one. As another reviewer said, once a series becomes successful , they always start using this ploy of writing an episode round only one lead. Maybe it was handier to arrange having just one star involved per week. Daisy as a character is also used increasingly as time goes on, and while it's "cute", she's not who we're watching to see. If it had gone to a 5th series I expect Mike ( a kid I never took to) would be carrying an episode as well. Significantly, Laramie didn't go to a fifth one, though westerns hadn't quite gone out of fashion.

poor episode loaded with crapolla

Guest star adam west was a royal pain and the rest of the cast of usual suspects played their usual nasty personas, including roy barcroft ... kathie browne played her usual eye candy role ... spring byington came to rescue a rather ignorant robert fuller ... it was too hard to believe that fuller would allow himself to be railroaded ... i guess the writers needed certain compensations to make amends for a phony script ... adam west made a poor liar and a crook
