Jess is walking in Ironwood after delivering horses nearby. A man, Sheriff Douglas, walks up behind him sticking his pistol in Jess' back telling him to walk over to the sheriff's office. Watching this unfold is Kett Darby and his pal Moss. Darby has let it be known that Jess is really outlaw Ray Thatcher hoping Jess will become irritated enough to join his outlaw gang lead by Thatcher. Jess shows the Sheriff his id and tells him why he is in Ironwood but Sheriff Douglas is still convinced he is Thatcher but he has to release Jess. He wants Jess out of town now but Jess refuses to leave until the next morning after he has eaten and rested. Outside Darby bumps into Jess and they decide to share a drink and meal. Jess soon detects that Darby's interest extend to their waitress Lorrie. Jess has no interest Darby's proposal but after Lorrie asks Jess' help, he decides to tell Sheriff Douglas the little he knows. Jess soon finds himself facing a murder charge, aiding and abetting the Ray Thatcher gangs robbery of the bank and a hangman's noose. His only salvation is Daisy Cooper, Lottie, and escaping jail to find Kett Darby to clear his name.
