A performance by the John Coltrane Quartet in the television series Jazz Casual, this 1963 date shot in black and white finds Coltrane in fine form as he and his band perform three tracks. Hosted by music critic Ralph J. Gleason Coltrane delivers as his seamless and discordant playing move and inspire with pianist Elvin Jones proving himself every bit the equal of his boss with some impressive playing. Bassist Jimmy Garrison is the weakest link but he wasn't bad and it's quite amusing to see and hear him sweating and straining as he mutters the rhythm to groove himself to the beat. Coltrane fumbles here and there himself but overall he and his henchmen don't disappoint. A good view and listen of a trailblazing artist in transition.
