Harm, Mac, Bud, and Harriet all investigate in Arizona and New Zealand. The Navy has proposed to name a new ship for the veteran, but the people of the tribe prefer that it not do so. The matter goes before a Navajo tribal court, the medicine woman reconsiders, and Harm proposes a solution. LCdr. Teresa Coulter, a pathologist, makes her first appearance. - A Navajo medicine woman refuses to believe the coffin the Marines brought actually has the remains of her brother-in-law, a World War II Navajo code talker. The people also refuse to allow DNA testing and are opposed to the Navy naming a ship after Jimmy Blackhorse. It isn't until Harm and Mac go to New Zealand to find Jimmy Blackhorse Jr. that the medicine woman accepts the remains, as well as a suggestion to name the ship after one of Blackhorse's comrades. Harm also quits smoking cigars in this episode.
- Members of the JAG team encounter resistance from Navajo tribal elders when they insist on DNA testing to verify that human remains are those of heroic Navajo ""code-talker"" Jimmy Blackhorse, who has been missing since World War II. Forensic pathologist Lt. Cmdr. Teresa Coulter joins Harm and Mac on the case. The Navajo elders consider it a sacrilege to tamper with the remains of the dead and, furthermore, the Navajo medicine woman is certain that the remains do not belong to the esteemed Blackhorse. While the veracity of scientific evidence is argued against that of tribal custom and the metaphysical, Teresa finds herself falling for Harm and putting the entire assignment in jeopardy..
