Ring of Hate

Warning: Spoilers
Leigh Garner (Dudley Sutton) is a talented boxer with good prospects. He can be angry in the ring but his demons come to the fore when his father Jim (Bernard Lee) reappears from Australia.

Leigh always thought that his father had died. Now Leigh is out of control and he has a championship fight coming up.

It is up to Dr Corder to probe why Leigh hated his father so much. It seems after his mother died. Leigh was sent to live with his aunt and then to a children's home.

An interesting look at childhood abuse, this time from the aunt who was cruel to Leigh. She also poisoned his mind against his father.

Such irrational behaviour from the aunt messed up Leigh.

There is a good performance from Sutton. Better known as Tinker in Lovejoy. In the 1960s he was from a generation of British actors that were influenced by the likes of Brando.

Good episode, with an interesting story.

Talented young Boxer Leigh Garner looks set for the big time, but after he receives a parcel from his estranged father, his promising career looks set to be in tatters. Doctor Corder has to help him ahead of his breakthrough fight.

A good story, with some interesting characters and a pretty bleak solution. Good to see a boxing story, something that would have been deemed as the epitomy of masculinity back then, the subject of a story about mental illness, I think it was quite a bold and brave choice.

The Lovejoy fan in me was unsure if I could see Dudley Sutton as a boxer, fondly remembered for playing Tinker, I think he showed here just what a good actor he was.

Not sure I liked some of the music, at times it feels a little bit jolly, however it's very well filmed and shot, it had the authenticity that the show has done so well with since the off.

Another thought provoking, original episode.

7/10.
