This episode is a very good one--and a good chance to catch some familiar faces. William Windom stars as the baddie in this one, as guy named "Connors" who is brilliant and completely amoral. A long time back, McGarrett caught him and sent him to prison for a decade. Now that he's out, he wants to make a big heist AND mess with the cops' minds while he's at it. I liked this one because the full intent of Connors' scheme isn't really apparent until the ending--making it a very complex show indeed.
The episode begins with Jackie Coogan ("Uncle Fester" from "The Addams Family") telling Danny about a robbery that is going to occur at a bank in the morning. However, you know it's a setup when shortly after Danno leaves, two thugs (including Connors) thank Uncle Fester for lying---and then kill him! Nice guys, huh?
The next day, while McGarrett and his men are staking out the bank, nearby the real robbery is occurring at a currency exchange. Connors and his partner have taken the exchange's manager's wife hostage--forcing the manager to take Connors to the exchange while the partner holds the wife prisoner in her home. Both crooks are wearing nylon stocking masks and it looks like it all went off without a hitch except for two problems. One, Connors only gets about $40,000 but if it had been timed earlier, he'd have gotten over 10 times that--how could such a meticulous guy arrive late and let the armored car men get most of the money?! Two, the partner is apparently a depraved perv and rapes and kills the wife!!
Later, Connors kills his partner--not just because of the rape, but to leave him and some other poor shmoe as patsies--making it look like these two, and not Connor, committed the crime. Now, the REAL reason for the way the exchange robbery occurred is soon revealed. It's brilliant but will McGarrett be able to figure it all out in time?!
In addition to a rich and complex plot, this one is interesting in order to see some of these old familiar TV faces. In addition to the familiar Windom and Coogan, you'll also see Phillip Pine--though they stupidly put false eyelids on him and said he was "Mr. Nomuru". Such ridiculous and insensitive casting wasn't uncommon in the show, as in season 1 they cast Ricardo Montalban and Mark Lenard as Japanese men!! Additionally, Harry Endo (who became a series regular, "Che Fong") made his first appearance on the show.
Oh, and by the way, towards the end of the show, look carefully when Connor goes into the currency exchange building that is supposed to be in Hong Kong. On the wall is an ad for US Savings Bonds--showing that the scene was actually filmed in Hawaii. Oops.
