Different but not creative

This is the episode every series feels the need for at least once, it seems. :-) The star through some accident is stuck in the wilderness under adverse and dangerous conditions, and even a glimpse of salvation proves elusive.

I've seen this story on Mannix (more than once), Cannon, 77 Sunset Strip, Maverick ... even Adam-12. LOL

Hawaii 5-0 did a nice job with their version, using a prior mob-boss character (of course) but not the same actor who previously played him. We first saw Charlie Bombay (I think) in the episode where he threw a hooker off an apartment or hotel balcony.

Here, he and an injured McGarrett play a game of one-upmanship while McGarrett works on his head ... correctly analyzing that Bombay's prison break was engineered by his former lieutenants to eliminate him. Interesting show.

A nice change of pace...

Warning: Spoilers
Charlie Bombay is a mob boss in Hawaii and it took McGarrett and his men several years' work to get this scum-bag behind bars. Odd, then, that he was never mentioned before this episode! Maybe it would have been better if this episode had involved an actual character from an earlier show. Regardless, the show begins with Bombay escaping prison--thanks to some help from a prison guard and a delivery man. However, Bombay is very quickly apprehended because one of his own men calls McGarrett to tell them where this escaped prisoner is.

In the following scene, McGarrett is escorting Bombay back to Honolulu in a tiny airplane. However, a storm hits and the plane is forced down in the forest. When the plane crashes, the pilot is killed and Bombay is able to get McGarrett's gun. Bombay now takes McGarrett captive and forces Steve to leave the crash site. Bombay plans on having his friends rescue him--so he needs to find a phone. What happens next? See for yourself.

This is a nice change of pace for the series though it's far from a great episode. While I loved the plane wreck idea and seeing Steve go to the Big Island, it also left me with several questions. First, why did they HAVE to leave in the plane at that time? Couldn't they have just waited until the weather was perfect? Second, when they did crash and Bombay repeatedly tried to get Steve's gun, why didn't McGarrett just shoot him? After all, the guy was an escaped prisoner, McGarrett was injured and Bombay was a scum-bag. I would have at least shot out his kneecaps! If you can look past these obvious questions, the show is pretty good. As I said, the new venue was nice and the show was a good change of pace.

Warning: Spoilers
After working for three years in prison, inmate Charlie Bombay organizes his escape with the help of prison guard Martin Langer, who is later double-crossed and killed to insure his silence. Bombay doesn't stay free long thanks to an anonymous tip and is recaptured while being smuggled in the back of a trucking company trailer. McGarrett personally leads the arrest and will escort Bombay back to prison using police plane N29162. The plane takes off into an approaching storm and goes down killing the pilot and McGarrett injuring his leg. The Coast Guard begins an immediate search and recovery mission. The recovery mission is temporarily called off by Commander Demarest due to poor weather. While waiting at the downed plane, Bombay and McGarrett struggle and Bombay takes McGarrett's revolver and handcuffs him. The pair struggle through the jungle, avoiding rescue parties and make their way to a small horse ranch where with the help of a young lady McGarrett gets free. Unbeknownst to McGarret who is working himself free, Bombay places a call to his crime buddies for a pickup at the ranch. Finally free and having been given a pistol from inside the house by the granddaughter, McGarrett is able to retake Bombay. While deciding what to do and where they're at, the men Bombay called arrive and begin a shootout with McGarrett. Bombay flees and thinks help has arrived for him. But as he is about to be picked up during the get-away, Ernie Kwan and his men shoot and kill Bombay instead. Local police arrive in time to seal the exit and all are arrested.
