Season 11 of "Hawaii Five-O" was a disaster. Through the first 10 seasons, the show had maintained a fairly high standard. However, it's obvious in season 11 that the show had simply run its course. Bad script after bad script became the norm. However, occasionally an excellent episode still managed to get made--such as the one just BEFORE "A Very Personal Matter". However, with "A Very Personal Matter" the show returned to form and this episode is pretty shabby thanks, once again, to disappointing writing.
The show begins with a young man overdosing and being taken to the hospital. The father (Cameron Mitchell) turns out to be an old friend of McGarrett and he asks Steve to help him figure out where his son got the junk. The trail leads to a doctor (Fritz Weaver) who gave the young man a prescription for Quaaludes. However, after investigating and then harassing the doctor, McGarrett concludes the man made a bad decision but didn't break any laws.
At this point, the show is decent--and I have no complaints. However, the plot went to bizarreville. When McGarrett realizes the doctor is innocent, he decides to harass him anyway. He goes to his office and demands that the doctor tell him about the other doctors--the ones who are illegally passing out dangerous drugs. What was McGarrett's basis for saying this? There was NOTHING in the plot that indicated to the police that the doctor knew anything!! None of this made any sense.
The show does end on a positive note--but then it ends with some preachy comments by McGarrett and he, the doctor and the friend all get together for a group hug---or so you assume happens after the credits started rolling! It's all very embarrassing to watch actually--and seemed just terribly written despite some interesting story ideas. Yep, the show's back to form here...
