Strong Cast Lifts This Story With Few Surprises
wdavidreynolds2 February 2021
James Whitmore returns for another guest appearance on Gunsmoke, this time as a man named Jim Forbes. Three years earlier, Forbes was sentenced to prison for defrauding several Dodge City residents. Forbes owns a mine just outside Dodge City. He is convinced there is gold in the mine.

In years past, Forbes was desperate for funds to continue his mining efforts. He decided to solicit investments from the people of Dodge. He salted the mine by placing quartz nearby, which can be an indicator of the presence of gold. Several people did invest in the mine only to discover later the actions Forbes had taken to encourage their investment. The investors -- some of which invested all the money they had -- reach the conclusion Forbes never thought there was any gold in the mine and simply swindled them. Forbes was arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to prison.

In the ensuing three years while Forbes was in prison, his wife has died, and his young son has gotten older. The previous investors are still upset and want Forbes to return their investments. Forbes remains as convinced as ever there is gold to be found in the mine and therefore stubbornly insists on returning to his mining efforts. He can do so thanks to money his sister has provided. When the investors learn Forbes has some money, they decide to attempt to force Forbes to use it to repay them. This is the basis for the tension in this story.

This episode features the solid guest cast we have come to expect from Gunsmoke. Whitmore is convincing as Jim Forbes, the beleaguered gold miner. This is the second of his three Gunsmoke appearances.

A young David Ladd plays Brian Forbes, Jim's son. In real life, David is the son of Alan Ladd and ex-husband of Cheryl Ladd. Ladd appeared in numerous television shows and films as a child and teenager before going on to a successful career in movie production. This is his only Gunsmoke appearance.

Peter Whitney, who is a familiar face to any fan of westerns, makes his final Gunsmoke appearance in this episode as Jason Holt. Whitney's involvement with Gunsmoke goes all the way back to the first season. Fred J. Scollay is a less familiar character actor that appears here as Clint Fisher, one of the people, along with Jason Holt, that hates Forbes.

This is yet another Season 11 episode where the regular characters do not have much to do. The story is built around Whitmore, Ladd, and the Whitney and Scollay characters. (The viewer does get to hear Festus talk at some length about another one of his family members: "Hard Rock" Hogan Haggen, who taught Festus all he knows about mining.) The story does not offer anything surprising, and the ending is predictable from the outset. The episode is still worth watching for the performances alone.

A nice show that was just too predictable

When Jim Forbes (James Whitmore) comes back to Dodge it causes a stir in the small town. Jim Forbes use to live outside Dodge and had a mine that he felt sure was rich with gold. He needed some money to keep digging and thought of a way to get the townsfolk to invest in his property. One day he salted the mine (meaning he placed quartz to make it look like he was close to a big find) and then got people to come visit and invest. Later the townsfolk found out that there was no gold arriving and they filed warrants on Jim and he was sentenced to three years. So his reunion to the town was not met with excitement.

Jim has returned with money from his sister, to start the mine back up. But this does not sit well with some of the citizens that lost money. They want his sister's money and will try to get it at any cost. They will not only try to beat the money out of Jim but also attack his teenage son. It boils down to where Jim straps a gun on and goes looking for the men responsible for his beating.

Even though the show was entertaining it was also very predictable. Without giving the ending away- any person can guess how this show will end and they would be correct. Anyway it was a good watch but was real vanilla in presentation.

Episode shown over and over again
LukeCoolHand27 August 2021
There are a few of the episodes from season 10 and 11 that they show over and over again This is one of them-- every time I turn to the Channel I get Gunsmoke on I see James Whitmore getting beat with a whip. I mean come on there are a few episodes they sometimes twice in a day or every other day. With 635 episodes to choose from this shouldn't be happening. Some of the other episodes shown over and over again are Ten Little Indians, The Raid Part One and Two, Twenty Miles from Dodge, Gilt Guilt -- all from season 10 or 11. Some episodes I really like and want to see again I have to wait 3 months or longer to see again. What gives ??

Warning: Spoilers
Usually when you watch an episode of Gunsmoke you get top notch production value. This episode had unprofessional lightning at times.

Sometimes I have contemplated what line Matt has said most over the many Gunsmoke years. In this episode he says: What's going on here!, twice. He seems to say that a lot when the plots don't involve him much.

I like how Matt, as well as Kitty and Festus, seems to intuitively know not to hold anything against the Stuart Whitmore character, despite him having screwed over part of the Dodge City community years before with his mining endeavor.

This episode would have been an okay one, other than the ending was predictable, which then rendered it less than okay.

It needed a twist like an IRS agent showing up at the end and taking a substantial piece of the gold nugget pie.
