"Under love's heavy burden do I sink."
It appears every television series in the late 1950s and early 1960s built the plot for an episode around the premise of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. A young man and woman are the offspring of two men that do not get along. They fall in love and want to marry, but the fathers hate one another and do everything possible to prevent the union.
This is the premise for this Gunsmoke installment. Emmett Bowers and Jake Pierce are the two rivals. Andy Bowers is Emmett's son, and Judy Pierce is Jake's daughter.
Jake Pierce involves Matt Dillon when he warns Matt people are going to be killed if nothing is done to stop his daughter and Andy Bowers from seeing one another. Jake's ridiculous solution is for Marshal Dillon to jail Andy Bowers until Bowers forgets about Judy. Of course, Matt is powerless to intervene.
Robert Vaughn portrays Andy Bowers in this story. This marks the second and final appearance in the series for Vaughn. This was early in Vaughn's acting career. His previous Gunsmoke role was late in the Season 1 episode "Cooter."
Lovely Barbara Eden makes her only Gunsmoke appearance as Judy Pierce in this story. Like Vaughn, Eden's acting career was just getting started with her role in this episode. It may have been the inexperience of the actors that led to the weak performances.
Barry Kelley, who often played villainous roles, portrays Jake Pierce. This is his first Gunsmoke role, but he would return once more in Season 9's "The Magician" where he plays a similar character to the one he plays in this story.
Tyler McVey appears in a single scene as Hank (credited as Emmett) Bowers. McVey appeared in six episodes of the series, including the series pilot, Season 1's "Hack Prine." All his Gunsmoke roles were small parts.
William "Bill" McGraw plays the character Ab Drain in his only appearance in the series. Drain gets to play the stupidly arrogant, overconfident gunfighter who is just itching to take on Matt Dillon.
Watch for a brief appearance by actor Bill Erwin as the preacher in this story. Erwin appeared in fourteen Gunsmoke episodes. Fans of the Seinfeld comedy series of the 1990s might remember Erwin as the cantankerous old man that Jerry "adopts" in an episode titled "The Old Man."
This below-average John Meston entry is made worse by a cardboard performance by Vaughn, and a complete lack of chemistry between Vaughn and Eden.
