Vacation (#2.8)
ComedyFan201014 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Rose, Dorothy and Blanche go on a vacation in the Caribbean. Their hotel turns out to be nothing as promised at the advertising and the staff is very rude. They even end up sharing the bathroom with three men from a neighbor room. In the meantime Sophia has fun with the Japanese gardener who doesn't speak English.

A pretty funny episode. I liked how horrible their room was, very creative. Especially the part with the vibrating bed! And the guys they share the bathroom with were funny as well. Especially the moment when one of them laughs that Dorothy's mother is still alive! Rose as a scout leader was a pleasure to watch as well.

The story of Sophia and the gardener was pretty cute. Although the kiss they had was weird, a bit to infantile I would say. Did they not want to offend the eyes of viewers by showing older people have a real kiss?

Bette White owns this episode.

Warning: Spoilers
In spite of the genuinely unlikable three younger men whom Dorothy, Rose and Blanche encounter while on vacation at a shabby Central American resort, this is memorable for Rose's take charge attitude and Sophia's friendship with gardener Keye Luke. Paul Rodriguez is very funny as the rebellion spouting resort employee, acting as the vibrating bed operator and treating their luggage like trash. The three obnoxious young men do get to redeem themselves at the end, but it's sad that once again, Sophia is neglected and forced to stay home alone.

Plot Summary

Warning: Spoilers
This was a fun episode. This review is a full synopsis of the episode, so only read it if you want to know all about it in detail.

Dorothy, Blanche and Rose go on vacation to a resort, looking forward to fun and relaxation in the sun. Rose is hounding Dorothy about not forgetting every little thing so Dorothy threatens to get 2 TAXI's.... one for herself and Blanche and the other for Rose if she doesn't stop. The taxi finally arrives and the ladies leave.

Once they do, a Japanese gardener comes in from the lanai and Sophie tries to talk to him, trying to tell him she likes him. He only sort of understands but agrees to a little liking.

The ladies finally arrive at the resort and their room is so much less than.... They complain to the manager and he tells Rose to stick her head way way out the window for the "ocean view". Blanche and Dorothy want to leave but Rose states the room is fully prepaid so they are stuck. Blanche wants to make the best of it, so she puts coins in the bed saying, let's enjoy this vibrating bed. They all get on the bed and a man comes into the room, singing and pushing the bed so that it shakes. The ladies do not look impressed. Back at home, Sophia and her Japanese gardener are getting along well; he is showing her how to use chopsticks and eat sushi. When she realizes it's raw fish, she distracts him and dumps it, saying it's delicious and then she is trying to kiss him.

At the resort, Rose wants to use the bathroom, but someone is in there. The ladies bust in, only to realize that 3 men in their bathroom. They discover they are in adjoining rooms and are sharing the bathroom. They exchange nasty words.

The next day, the ladies are sitting morosely in the lobby when the 3 men arrive and apologize for their behaviour and order a bottle of champagne. They also say they have rented a sailboat and want to invite the ladies to go sailing with them and to meet back in 45 minutes. Dorothy states she's going to call her mother and one of the men states in surprise "Your mother is still alive?" When Dorothy gives him a stunned look , he slinks away sheepishly.

The next scene, we see everyone getting off the boat onto an island. The ladies are upset at the men for taking them out into a storm and shipwrecks them. They are all desolate until Rose takes charge, stating she is a scout and they better listen to her if they want to live. She sends the men off to find a waterfall for clean water.

The ladies make a fire and start confessing because they think they will die, then argue and fight and make up.

The men come running back, singing and with drinks in their hands. They found a waterfall, which was next to a pool, which was next to a great hotel, the Hyatt Regency. They booked themselves a room and one for the ladies. Apparently, they got themselves shipwrecked on the good side of the island.

All 6 go dancing off, happy!

I hope you enjoyed the episode as much as I did.

Warning: Spoilers
I don't dislike this episode I think for me the episodes that irk me center around a few Stan ones especially the christmas one he's selfishly gross. But a fun fact SPOILER ALERT

While around the campfire rose confesses to reading Blanches diary which Blanche forgives rather quickly..however in another episode Blanche finds roses diary believing rose thinks her and Dorothy are equivalent to living with pigs they get mad at her until she finds out and gets really hurt that they read her private thoughts even tho it was a 4h diary when she kept two piggies lol lots of inconsistent story lines but regardless the best show ever!

A holiday for The Girls.
Sleepin_Dragon8 April 2023
The Girls head to Caribbean Island for a Holiday, leaving Sophia behind to romance with Japanese gardener Toshiro.

I really enjoyed this episode, it had some super funny one liners, and how amazing was it to see a different side of Rose's character, here she was tough and bossy. I loved Ramone, he was a scream, and I absolutely loved that scene on the beach.

What resonated, was that awful room, who hasn't been on a holiday and ended up in a horrible room.

I loved the encounter between The Girls and the three strange men, they were clearly on a lads holiday, the girls were clearly out for some laughs and culture, it really was a clash of two worlds.

'As a child during the depression, I had my wisdom tooth removed by a shoe maker, that was more fun,' is that perhaps one of the best one liners of all time, I spat my wine out when I heard that.

8/10.

A waste of an episode
mloessel5 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In this episode I suspect the writers ran out of creativity and threw ideas on the wall. What stuck was a story that was flat. The Girls go on vacation and where they go has the worst possible accommodations. The humor is hard to find. Of course Rose did all the planning. Not a good thing. With her as as the trip planner this episode had potential but the writers went to the extreme and the extreme wasn't funny. In all fairness the writers generally get a strike 99% of the time. And that's why i watch this gem of situation comedy that ran 7 years. And yes i do watch the 1 percenters looking for some hint of humor. I know it's there. This time ... well maybe not.

A new low
yellowmarlin25 August 2021
Easily the worst episode of the series to date. Dreadful plot, awful guest characters, non-existent humour. Dorothy's reaction to Rose taking charge was the only funny moment.

Totally in agreement with "A New Low" captioned review!
Somesweetkid7 November 2023
As mentioned in my caption, I am in complete agreement with the reviewer who entitled this episode "a new low." However, I am being less generous in my rating number.

Over the years, I have enjoyed watching the series and feel it was and (in syndication) continues to be one of the wittiest and most well-written sitcoms. I always watch it if I am in a down mood and need a good laugh.

However, this episode had two of the most obnoxious portrayals of its run. Those actors were the employees of the Caribbean resort. I have never been a fan of the guy who played the concierge in any role I've ever seen him portray. And the actor who did the schtick of vibrating their hotel's non-functioning vibrating bed was not the least bit funny. I don't think I chuckled once watching the whole episode.

Finally, Rose's take-charge actions at the end were ridiculous. I love Betty White but her character was always my least favorite and her actions in this episode were uncharacteristic and painfully bad.

Bottom line, I hated this episode.
