A bit schmaltzy, perhaps, but I liked it.

I found this episode of "GE True Theater" at archive.org and this site (frequently linked to IMDb) has quite a few old shows available for free download. Like many episodes of the series, this one stars Ronald Reagan as well as Diane Brewser as Maggie and Evelyn Rudie as Lana.

The show begins with Maggie wandering in to a record shop run by Paul (Reagan). He thinks she's come about a job but she is wealthy and doesn't need work. Nonetheless, she takes the job because she instantly likes him. And, after a couple weeks they're already talking about getting married. However, Maggie is turned off by one thing--Paul's insistence that he take in and raise Lana--a rather feral child whose own mother couldn't care less about her. Lana is ugly and not particularly pleasant and when Maggie pushes Paul to give her to the State, he is angry and calls off their relationship. What comes next was a MAJOR surprise and I won't say more--it would spoil this show. Suffice to say, it was very sweet and Reagan was exceptional. In fact, it was all exceptionally made--though I suspect some these days might read too much into the story considering that a single guy is suddenly taking in a little girl. Well worth your time.
