- John's high school classmate is assigned as Squad 51's new trainee, and Dixie escorts John to him. The firemen rescue a man trapped in his kitchen by a hydrogen sulfide explosion. An accident near Rampart brings three victims into the ER; with limited capacity the paramedics jump in to help and the trainee's inexperience shows. A child has an injured nose at an amusement park go-kart track; later at the same park a man having a heart attack is trapped on the Sky Ride, later a man thought to be intoxicated was actually bitten by a cobra; Roy is later sprayed in the eyes with the cobra's venom.—Gary Richard Collins II (brothergaryii@gmail.com)
- Johnny is excited when Dixie brings his high school track idol, Gil Richardson, played by Colby Chester (who portrayed Johnny's Squad 10 partner in the pilot) to train with Squad 51. Gil is very good with children; a boy patient at Rampart clearly idolizes him. A married man trying to fix his garbage disposal causes a hydrogen sulfide explosion when he uses caustic soda crystals and asks his wife to pour acid over same. Gil is confused and slow to react the first time he works with Dr. Brackett and the emergency team. Gil compares himself to Johnny and Roy and starts to doubt himself. Echoes of young freshman hero worship are evident as Johnny tells his co-workers Gil can do anything and he will be a good paramedic. At an amusement park, a young shyster runs his mouth when he and another boy are injured at bumper cars; a man has a heart attack on the Ferris Wheel. Later, an apparently intoxicated man is the victim of more than "the dog who bit him" and Gil's quick thinking saves Roy considerable pain. Back at Rampart, it is clear Johnny was right...and Gil may inspire a future generation of firefighter paramedics.—LA-Lawyer
