Patrick Troughton and Frazer Hines worked out the brief sequence where both the Doctor and Jamie go to take Victoria by the hand and end up taking each other's, in secret, without the knowledge of director Morris Barry. They knew that, with the recording schedule and the likelihood that re-takes would not be possible, it would have to be left in.
Matt Smith watched The Tomb of the Cybermen in preparation for playing The Doctor. This immediately made him a fan of the series and he was even inspired to wear a bow tie because of Patrick Troughton. Smith also said this was the scariest Cybermen story ever.
This serial was released by the BBC on video cassette in May 1992, just a few months after being rediscovered. In 2002 it was released on DVD with digitally remastered picture quality by the Doctor Who (1963) Restoration Team and a commentary track by Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling.
The Doctor tells his companions, Jamie & Victoria, he is 450 years old.
