Edna Craven (Lola Albright) ia the arch manipulator. Her husband Alfred Craven is mistaken for a prowler and is shot dead by Lee Taber.

To the police, she has sympathy for Lee Taber (Russell Johnson) the man who pleads self defence to the police. After all he supposedly shot a prowler. Captain Holbrook finds out that Mr Craven was known to the accused. He owned a lot of beach properties and Lee had done drawings of Alfred Craven.
With no forensics implicating Lee Taber such as powder burns, Holbrook knows that Mr Craven's killer might get off.
