THE DETECTIVES – Point of no Return - 1962

This one is episode 80 of the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.

There has been a big armed robbery of a plant payroll office in the city. The five crooks have made a big haul, and escaped with a cool 250,000 in cash. They pile into two cars and split for the town limits. They make it to the outlying hills and then split up. They will meet later at an abandoned mining town in the deep hills.

The one car though has taken a shot through the radiator and soon gives up the ghost. The gunman, Jerry Paris, flags over a passing automobile with some newlyweds, Josh Piene and Leslie Wales in it. He pulls a gun and has them drive him out into the hills so he can make his meeting.

Ten miles into the desert, the car rips out the oil pan on the rocky road. The three of them are now stranded. Paris just needs to wait till the second getaway car comes along. He waves the gun at the newlyweds and tells them to stay calm. Sure enough they meet up with the several more of the gang, Robert Gist and Pamela Duncan. Their car is also shot because of the bad roads.

They decide to hike it to the hideout in the hills. Several more members of the gang are waiting there with a helicopter. They plan on using it to make good their escape. Gun happy Jerry Paris, shoots newlywed Piene in the leg for talking back. They leave the wounded man and drag along the new bride as a hostage. They head off cross country to the hideout.

While all this has been going on, Captain of Detectives, Robert Taylor has been in the hills doing a spot of hunting. He has been contacted by the local law about the big hold up. Taylor of course drives right up on the abandoned cars and the wounded Piene. He gets on the horn to headquarters about the wounded man. He then sets off to track down and rescue Piene's wife, Miss Wales.

He soon comes up on the group but is captured by the crooks. They drag him along to the hideout. They toss Taylor and Wales in a room and set a guard on them. By this time Taylor's men are hot on the trail and have a helicopter of their own.

Needless to say there is plenty of gunfire, as the heavily armed bandits refuse to be good citizens. Paris, Gist and the other male gang members are soon laid horizontal with a low blood count. The only survivor is Pamela Duncan. She is cuffed and hauled off for a date with a judge. Miss Wales is rushed to the hospital to see her dear beloved.

Point of No Return
Prismark107 June 2023
Louise and Everett are newlyweds on a quiet desert road. They are stopped by Michael who claims that his car has broken down and his wife is all alone.

The couple are reluctant and Michael agrees with them. He would not stop to offer a life to a stranger. However he is a trustworthy looking person so they ask him to jump in.

They should have listened to Michael. He is a robber on the run and he needs to rendezvous with the other robbers.

Soon Everett is injured and Louise is held captive. Luckily Captain Matt Holbrook is in a hunting trip and hears about the robbery and decides tom help out local law enforcement. He also sends a garbled message to his home base.

Holbrook finds the injured Everett and then decides to go after the rest of the gang by pretending to be a local hunter.

There is a lot of location footage, some expensive helicopter shots as Sgt Steve Nelson tries to find Holbrook.

It ends with a lot of muscular gunfire and some character moments with the head of the gang, Tully. Not for him going fishing and living of his memories in old age. He wants to enjoy himself by drinking wine like you do in middle age.
