THE DETECTIVES – One Lucky Break - 1961
This one is episode 72 of the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.
While out on patrol late at night, Detectives Mark Goddard and Adam West stumble on what looks like a break in at a bank. West enters through the back of the bank and Goddard goes around to the front. West walks right into three men standing in front of an open safe.
West yells for the three to raise their hands. Two of the men do as asked. At the same time one of these two yards a piece and starts blasting. The lights go out and multiple rounds are exchanged in the dark. Two of the men get past West and bolt for the alley and their car. By this time, Goddard has returned to the back of the building. He manages to wing one of the crooks while the other drives off.
Goddard drags his man into the bank to look for his partner, West. He finds him in the office with a wounded man, Roger De Koven. De Koven has a bullet wound in his shoulder. They roll the wounded man over and discover that his hands are tied behind his back. He is the manager of the bank. He screams bloody blue murder that he had been kidnapped and forced to open the safe.
Detective West is soon suspended by the Police higher ups for shooting a civilian. The man captured at the scene refused to answer any questions. West tells his boss, Robert Taylor that he is sure that De Koven was in on the robbery. Taylor tells him to take his suspension and stay away from it. The squad will look into the matter.
This of course does not sit well with Detective West. He goes out and does some digging on his own. At the same time, Goddard and Detective Tige Andrews are doing their own investigation. There are a few red herring thrown at West and the other Detectives. There is De Koven's lodge where he says he goes every Wed. The Police find out that the Lodge meetings are only held on Friday. So what is he up to on Wed nights? Some rooting around has West come up with a bit of fluff, Leigh Snowden, whom banker De Koven has been keeping on the side. West breaks in on Snowden and plans on taking her in to clear his name. That idea goes south, as Than Wyenn now puts in an appearance with gun in hand. Wyenn is the crook who had escaped the bank hold-up with the cash. Snowden is really the girlfriend of Than Wyenn. He is also the gangster who planned out the robbery etc. Needless to say they planned on disposing of the love struck De Koven down the road a bit.
Now West is a problem that needs to be taken care of. Lucky for the Detective that Goddard and Andrews have been on the same trail. They arrive just in time to save West and spoil Snowden and Tyenn's plan for a South American vacation.
