The Provider Quest, a fishing boat owned by the Nootka Fish Packing Company, capsizes which claims the lives of three of the five crew, the three being from three generations of the Vale family. The two survivors are Paul Stiles, a deck hand, and Michael Vale, also among the third generation of the family. The Coroner's Office decides to take this investigation to inquest to see if there were any safety violations. The fish packing company and the fisherman's union take their respective positions in the inquest, as does Gina Vale-Kipman, the granddaughter/daughter/wife of the three deceased. In specific question for the inquest are the state of the men (the two recovered bodies showed some signs of alcohol consumption and some broken bones received prior to the accident) and the stability of the boat itself in relation to the loading of cargo. The inquest brings up some dysfunction within the Vale family. Although nothing to do with the accident itself, Michael ultimately reveals what happened in the death of Gina's husband, Ray. During the investigation, Da Vinci must deal with his own grief in the preparation of his father's funeral. One of Da Vinci's tasks is to carve the headstone.
