Rare Funny "Combat"
aramis-112-80488017 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
"Combat!" starring Vic Morrow and Rick Jason, following a squad of soldiers from D-Day through their eternal slog through France, was often unremittingly grim. But like other shows of its era, it lightened up occasional with a flash of humor. "The Town that Went Away" -- starring an hilarious Jay Novello and the lovely Susan Silo -- was a comedic gem.

In a storyline similar to the later novel and movie "The Secret of Santa Vittoria" Mayor Lejeune (Novello) tries to keep World War II from entering his town to preserve the town's store of its wonderful cognac.

When Lt. Hanley (Jason) and his squad are ordered to evacuate the town, Lejeune and his townsfolk, including his daughter Annice (Silo), having seen what happens to other towns that get evacuated, try any way they can to keep the Americans out. The first indication that this episode is a comedy is a pre-credit sequence where the mayor and a friend are altering road signs.

The French know they can't keep the Americans out forever. Disguising the winery as a monastery and having the townsfolk dress as monks, they delay the Americans long enough to transfer the cognac to the caves outside of town beneath their monk robes.

Then they learn the Americans have come to blow up a pass to keep the Germans out. And the cave full of wine is in that pass. How do Lt. Hanley and Mayor Lejeune save the day -- and the wine? This episode is a delight from start to finish, mainly due to Novello and Silo. It's worth a peek even if you aren't a fan of war shows.

Silly Episode that does not Fit to Combat!

"The Town That Went Away" is a silly episode that does not fit to "Combat!". Fans of this series certainly enjoy the realism of the documentary-like style in black and white with great characters. It is hard to understand what the writer George F. Slavin and the producers expect from this disrespectful and unfunny episode. My vote is four.

Combat! tries comedy and the result is quite silly and embarrassing

Lt. Hanley and the squad are heading to French town to evacuate the inhabitants as the Germans are advancing towards the town. However, the inhabitants keep trying to prevent him completing his mission, altering road signs and generally making their town appear to be a different town.

A comedy episode of Combat! And it's as bad as you'd think it would be. The scheming and goings on of the French town folk, and the mayor in particular, is particularly irritating and hardly funny. I kept hoping Hanley would have the mayor arrested as a saboteur or German collaborator, just to get things back on track, but no such luck.

Easily the worst episode of the show. Stick to drama.

For honor and freedom!

The jaunty, humorous music indicates a light-hearted episode, with Vic taking the week off and Rick leading our squad of regulars.

Mission is simple: help evacuate the little French town of Bonnaire, which the advancing Germans are poised to occupy. The rub is that the inhabitants of Bonnaire are pranksters, doing all they can to stymie the Americans from even finding their village.

There's even slapstick included as the fun Frenchmen try to fool our heroes. Jay Novello plays Bonnaire's mayor and has fun bamboozling Rick, eventually dispatching his three sexy daughters to distract the Americans. The denizens of his town are risking their lives for a dumb reason, in a cutesy departure from the "Combat!" format, devoid of any violence for once.

Eventually the Germans draw near and Rick puts his foot down: the pass leading into the town must be blown up to prevent enemy tanks from entering the town, but the folks have evacuated their treasured product of cognac in a cave there. Rick makes an impassioned speech about fighting for freedom and honor, climaxing in the lieutenant's cry: "You see cognac, I see French blood!". Needless to say our hero wins them over before it's too late, leading to a Pollyannaish happy ending.
