Surprising SLEEPER Episode at Season 4's End.

Warning: Spoilers
Even though this show, late in the season, is essentially a rehash of the first season's "The Medal", it ultimately stands on its own as a truly fine episode. The closing scene, as Dwayne Hickman admits his own cowardice to the squad, never fails to bring a tear to the eye (mine, that is). Beautifully done. A tribute to the integrity and emotional spirit of this great series. LR

Freezing

While flanking a German machine gun nest with his fellow Private Booker, Private Corey freezes and Booker dies after destroying the nest. Corey subdues German Lieutenant Vogler that survives and makes him prisoner of war. Saunders's squad believes Corey is a hero, capturing a German soldier in his first combat. But when Corey learns that Vogler speaks English, he panics afraid of the squad learns the truth.

"Run, Sheep, Run" is a good episode of "Combat!", developing Corey and his relationship with Vogler very well. Their confrontation is interesting and Corey´s final decision is moralist but OK. My vote is seven.

Memorable Frank Marth On Combat !
jmarchese11 November 2014
"Run Sheep Run" showcases fear in new GI Corey (well played by Dwayne Hickman) and how he deals with it during and after his first combat action.

During his first confrontation with Germans, Corey teams up with Booker (played by Walter Maslow) to knock out a German stronghold. Booker gets it done at the cost of his life when Corey freezes. Because of Booker's efforts, Corey takes Lieutenant Vogler (excellently played by Frank Marth) prisoner. In the eyes of White Rook, Corey's near hero status. Soon after, Corey panics when he realizes Vogler speaks English and knows the truth.

Esther & Bob Mitchell wrote an excellent screenplay portraying a young GI's fears and how he deals with them. Character development is outstanding between Corey & Vogler as the lieutenant psyches Corey out in his escape attempts. Frank Marth puts on a real show in dealing with White Rook. Marth's memorable ending sequence shows what superb acting is all about and the viewing audience is treated to great words of wisdom in the process.

Bernard McEveety did an outstanding job directing each of the graphic combat scenes. He continually rotates close-ups of both American & German gun fire in rapid succession to synergize effect on the audience. Note the great close-up of Booker in the opening sequence just before he throws the grenade; absolutely outstanding! And Lieutenant Vogler at the end; this is what great directing is all about.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Run Sheep Run" and hope you will too.

So tired, tired of waiting...
lor_30 September 2023
Dwayne Hickman guest stars, looking sweaty and hiding something in a long-drawn out episode.

It opens with a battle in which Dwayne freezes up and fails to shoot at a German who kills his fellow soldier, with Hickman ending up capturing the German (played by Frank Marth). Vic's squad thinks Dwayne performed heroically but he knows that he let his comrade down, and hides his guilt until confessing at the end of the show. Gimmick is that the German (who speaks English) is capable of finking on him at any time.

This is cornball "Combat!" at its corniest -with the viewer expected to patiently wait for the other shoe to drop, which it inevitably does.
