A battle with artillery is being waged nearby as Vic with his troops take a pair of prisoners with them en route back to the battalion. With explosions everywhere, they encounter a large group of Germans under the care of a major (William Schallert) who orders Vic to help him get the 18 prisoners to a rear area before a squad of advancing Germans can free them.
Most prisoners were picked up at a rocket installation, and at least one of them should have valuable information, so it's a priority to get them back for interrogation. When the major and his driver are killed, the burden of corraling such a large group falls squarely on Vic's shoulders.
At night a crafty lieutenant tries to escape and the prisoners try various ruses to try and outwit our vastly outnumbered heroes. After a skirmish with a German squad, they next face the hurdle of fording a river with this large group in tow.
Things finally come to a head when the lieutenant gets the drop on Vic, but guess who outwits who?
The episode is strained in its one-note type of suspense, but the trick ending is fun.
