An interesting topic is treated in "Command": how would our squad of lovable "Combat!" soldiers react to a replacement for Rick Jason's Lt. Hanley? I have often wondered, at a meta-level, what the series might have been had the popular actor of his character not been featured. Obviously there would be no series, or at least not the hit one, had the inimitable Morrow not been cast.
Character actor Joseph Campanella is the new lieutenant, filling in for our wounded hero who's shipped out to England for a week of treatment, and he plays the black hat role perfectly. He's leading th4em on a dangerous mission to blow up a bridge, and is curt and unrelentingly stern with the men, including VIc.
Things get intense with a standoff at a farmhouse, with the lieutenant proving to be a coward, who's haunted by the memory of his previous platoon was wiped out. He's become a dangerous risk-taker, with Vic saving the day,
It makes for a nice combination of character study, men acting under pressure and finally exciting combat action.
