"Justice delayed is justice denied," unless Cheyenne Bodie has anything to say about it.

Warning: Spoilers
Cheyenne has been the sheriff in LeHigh for six months. During that time, he has become especially close to widow Cora Ainslie (Randy Stuart) and her young son Bart. We don't get a lot of back-story but Cora seems to think that Cheyenne loves her and he doesn't deny or confirm it, although she does get a kiss. In the end, however, it appears that Cheyenne isn't ready to commit to her, because in the very next episode, he has moved on without Cora and Bart in tow. But the intrigue begins long before that final good-bye.

On one of his few nights' off, when he's helping Bart with his math in their home, the town bank is hit in a well-coordinated robbery, and after some investigation it becomes obvious that the entire incident is directed at one man, the despicable banker, Mr. Thackeray Smith (ultra-stoic John Anderson), the most loathed man in the entire valley. There's more to the story, of course, going all the way back to Civil War atrocities, but even though he sympathizes with the miscreants, the ever-honorable Sheriff Bodie is determined to uphold the law. By now that's what we expect of him. Even though he's proven that he can be emotionally drawn to some of the people he's met in his travels, he doesn't let his personal feelings interfere with his sworn duty as an officer. One stellar attribute of the series is that justice prevails, and in this day and age, that's a quality that very much appeals to many.

After resolving the mystery of Thackeray Smith and his connection to a long list of local men, Sheriff Bodie effects a surprise ending that is one of the most satisfying of the entire series. LeHigh can be the peaceful, close-knit community the humble residents want, and he can move on knowing that once again he has done his job.
